AP sources: House lays groundwork for CIA probe
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Intelligence Committee has asked the CIA to provide documents about the now-canceled program to kill al-Qaida leaders, congressional officials said Tuesday.

The agency spent at least $1 million on the eight-year program before it was terminated last month, one congressional official said. Intelligence officials say the operation never progressed beyond a planning stage.

The CIA said Tuesday that the agency would cooperate in the House move, a precursor to what would likely become a full-blown investigation into the secret operation and why the program was not disclosed to Congress. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

CIA Director Leon Panetta, meanwhile, ordered a thorough internal review, agency spokesman George Little said.

4. "We carried it out"
that would be my guess. For the ones we did not kill. Any person who contributed money or time to that event deserves to die.

3. I get a strong feeling that the Congresscritters have tumbled onto something big
and the Al Quaeda story is nothing but a nice cover for the moment because they don't want to get everyone all excited prematurely. Specifically, I think they've figured out something about the CIA's involvement in domestic intelligence gathering for political purposes. Why would Cheney have given a shit about killing AlQuaeda agents? The cover story makes no sense; it fails the smell test on several levels.

5. We shut down a program to kill AQ? Then lets' bring our troops home, WTF!
I tell ya, that story makes 0 sense on so many levels it's not funny.

I hope there is a real investigation that gets to the bottom of this.

For a collection of stories that talk about our active policy to target AQ check this link...

I mean come on, even Obama campaigned on this, and carries out targeted killings to this very day, there has got to be something much more than just this.

She ain't buying the current narrative (Top Secret policy to Kill AQ) either.

This narrative only serves to make the dems look WEAK.

7. I keep thinking along the lines of either very purposeful hype

designed to give both the CIA and Congress an appearance of actually cooperating and "doing something" about something amidst the growing clamoring-- a nice quick little temporizing win-win for both entities in extreme bad need of image rehabilitation surrounded by all the scandal and inertia so far.. The CIA suddenly goes running to Congress with its hair all on fire to self-report on something and seek oversight. Congress says we're on it. Intrepid Corp Media doggedly keeps nation informed that it is aggressively "investigating." Everybody involved looks GOOD for a time, because that's the way it's supposed to work-- but never has..

I know one thing for sure-- I agree with many others here that the leaked story-line chosen and being planted in the press doesn't begin to pass the smell test. Although it would not be the first time recycled "revelations" would be put forward and treated as new. (ie the Red Cross reports on abuse, ghost detainees).

Or... it IS a limited hangout thing for something bigger. Maybe it is a pre-emptive CYA for something they learned they weren't going to be able to retain control of, no matter what.

Maybe something upcoming in credible foreign media outlets beyond US control? I seem to recall, for instance that the incredible revelations about extraordinary renditions/torture flights were put together completely outside the US Media.
