Russian activist abducted in Chechnya found slain

By MANSUR MIROVALEV – 4 hours ago

MOSCOW (AP) — A prominent Russian activist who investigated abductions, killings and other rights abuses in Chechnya was shot to death Wednesday, found lying on a road with two bullet wounds in her head hours after being kidnapped, Russian police and activists said.

Four men forced Natalya Estemirova into a car in the Chechen capital of Grozny on Wednesday and witnesses heard her yell that she was being abducted, Oleg Orlov, head of the Memorial rights group where Estemirova worked, told The Associated Press.

Her body was found on a roadside in Ingushetia, which borders Chechnya to the west, not far from the region's main city of Nazran, Orlov said. She had two close-range bullet wounds in her head, according to Ingush Interior Ministry spokeswoman Madina Khadziyeva.

The killing came only hours after a news conference in Moscow where human rights groups presented a report saying that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and other top Russian officials should be prosecuted in an international court for crimes committed during the two wars that devastated Chechnya over the past 15 years.

A Russian campaigner on human rights was abducted and murdered on Wednesday, hours after her organisation backed calls for Vladimir Putin to face trial over atrocities in Chechnya.
