Weapon Found in Fla. Couple’s Killing (safe was stolen)
Source: NYTimes

*snip*

The authorities said the suspects are for the most part day laborers who know one another through an auto detailing shop and power washing business. In addition, they said the suspects had apparently spent 30 days training for the heist, which was executed as planned with one problem: someone failed to disable the surveillance system, which the couple had installed to monitor their children.

Seven of those arrested — all men, including a 16-year-old — were charged with murder. The eighth person, Pamela Wiggins, 47, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with accessory to murder. The police say she is a longtime friend of one of the seven men, Leonard Gonzalez Jr., who was said to have played a “pivotal” role in the murders.

The investigators said they were still looking for at least one or two more people of interest, including an eighth man who may have had the job of disabling the surveillance system but backed out at the last minute.

“There are obviously a lot of loose ends to tie up, but we believe that this concludes the major part of our investigation,” Sheriff Morgan said. “This was a home invasion robbery where the people stole a safe and we recovered the safe and I personally think it’s as simple as that in terms of the motive and what occurred.”

3. read "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote...
about the Clutter family killing in Kansas in 1959...Hickock and Smith, the killers, thought there was a great deal of money in a safe in the house...

great book, chilling movie...

BTW...a college room-mate of mine's dad was the Kansas KBI agent portrayed by John Forsyth in the movie...the room-mate had spent a lot of time around Capote while he was researching the book, and had affected the 'bow-tie' look that Capote had....

4. I wish they had revealed what was in the safe.
What a very odd story. Imagine that large a number of people all agreeing to rob and kill these people. Why would they do it? Did they all have a lack of conscience or did they find a way to mentally demonize the parents of 16 kids.
