At least six die in Jakarta hotel bombings
Source: The Age (Melbourne)

Bombs have exploded at the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, killing at least six foreigners and ripping the facade off the Ritz, police say.

The head of the Health Ministry crisis centre, Rustam Pakaya, said at least two people were seriously injured, including one New Zealander.

One hospital emergency room said it was already treating 15 people.

A witness reported seeing bodies inside the Marriot.

2. Innocent human beings slaughtered ..yawn
Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 10:24 PM by abq e streeter
since the murder of innocent people is apparently no big deal to you , I'm sure you'll be happy to volunteer yourself or your family to die a senseless violent death and have some other alleged progressive dismiss it with a bored "yawn".

4. Nobody cares aboth the Million dead in Iraq, so why should I care anymore?
Don't need to volunteer, a comet could fall out of the sky next week.

Don't here a word about Iraq casualties. Oh yeah, we don't do body counts anymore, unless it can be used to raise fear in the average person.

5. Why bother even commenting on something you don't care about?
There has been a terrorist attack in Jakarta with a still unknown total of innocent dead/injured causing yet more families & friends to go into mourning. What that has do do with starting another war - as stated in your 1st response to this - is anybody's guess.

I agree that there should (have) be(en) more of a media spotlight shone on the million+ dead in Iraq but just because it isn't headline news every single day doesn't preclude that there aren't a great deal of people across the world who care about them. Why does that even have to be brought into a discussion about today's bombings in Jakarta? They are two topics that are potentially related, but certainly not in the way you frame it.

I've been living in Indonesia since before the Bali bombings in 2002 and have witnessed 1st hand the disastrous effect of the previous terrorist attacks on the lives of friends and family. We are all in a state of great confusion and deep concern again, and I'm sure those emotions are being felt across Indonesia right now.

6. That's twice the Marriott Hotel
has been bombed. I seem to recall after 2003 that it was a target because it was used mainly by wealthy westerners. True?

15. Indonesia
I lived in Djakarta (before they dropped the D) in 1962-64. I imagine it's changed a great deal.

When I think of Indonesia now it's like a dream - it was a dream world for a child, miles of rice paddies, riding horses, listening to angklung players. Instead of dogs and cats I had monkeys and cockatoos for pets. Our parents were always busy and we were allowed to roam as we would. I think that experience, going down into the villages and seeing firsthand the poverty, illness and the stark difference between how I lived and how my friends lived, helped shape my political views today.

I too hate the blase attitude expressed by the poster. Some of the victims could have been children I played with.

You would think both places were well protected against this kind of attacks. I am sure someone will be collecting a nice insurance check soon (and I am not talking about the victims here).

8. Update: Reuters Link: Bombs rip through Indonesia hotels, killing nine
JAKARTA, July 17 (Reuters) - Bomb blasts ripped through luxury hotels in the heart of Indonesia's capital on Friday, killing nine people and wounding dozens in attacks the president said badly hurt confidence in the country.

The bombs targeted the JW Marriott hotel, scene of a car bomb attack in 2003, and the Ritz-Carlton, both popular with visiting international businessmen and thought to boast some of the tightest security in Jakarta.

A car bomb killed two people along a toll road in the north of the capital, police said, and an unexploded homemade device was also later found on the 18th floor of the Marriott.

10. Hotel 'terror' blasts kill nine in Jakarta
Source: CNN News

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Bomb blasts tore through two luxury hotels Friday morning in Jakarta, Indonesia, killing at least nine people in what the country's president called a "terrorist" attack.

Officials said more than 50 people were injured in the explosions at the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott hotels, which punched out the windows of a usually crowded restaurant and sent plumes of smoke into the sky.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the bombings as the work of extremists.

"I condemn this terrorist attack," Yudhoyono said. "I know they will never stop."

One of the people killed was identified as Timothy David McKay, 60, a New Zealand national, according to state-run Antara News Agency. Authorities were working to identify the other victims, the agency reported.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton condemned the bombings as reflecting "the viciousness of violent extremists" and said they "remind us that the threat of terrorism remains very real." She said the United States was prepared to provide assistance if requested by the Indonesian government.

11. since the last vid put out by "#2" , not much has happened
http://blogs.abcnews.com/theworldnewser/2009/07/watch-bomb-rips-through-hotel-in-jakarta.html

Soft targets against 'western' symbols' does get the western MSM's attention. Lucky Indonesia, the largest muslim country in the world, isn't following that garden variety thats nurtured in the middle east. Obama was fast to denounce the attack that is good news. Makes me think the thread ( that was locked ) about the 14 Iranians being hanged on drug offenses was true since I didn't see any MSM wouting his opinion of the incident.

btw, how many muslims were killed in the blast as opposed to 'crusaders' ?

12. unexploded bomb found, diffused ( cold feet ? )
snip

Later Friday, police confirmed they had found an unexploded bomb in a room on the 18th floor of the Marriott Hotel.
"We had to defuse the bomb because it's armed and ready to explode. The bomb is now secure," a police spokesman said.
Djalal, who said the lobby of the Marriott bore the brunt of the explosions, vowed that those behind the attacks would be brought to justice.

14. When I saw the headline on msn news
Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 06:19 PM by Cha
around 1pm on my break today.."Suicide bombers in Java 8 Americans hurt"..my heart did a leap.

My son went to Java to surf and even though I knew he wouldn't be staying at those hotels I started crying for all the sadness that someone would feel when they found out it was their loved ones.

What's the purpose? They think they go to heaven? The people that recruited them get a smug satisfaction of killing random strangers for what cause?

Now the hotels will be like airports..no one gets in without their baggage being thoroughly investigated.

RIP..the latest victims of suicide bombers.
