Quayle: Obama's challenge is taming leftist Dems

Updated: July 18, 2009 11:44 AM EDT

Stateline, Nev. - Former Vice President Dan Quayle gives President Obama high marks for surrounding himself with quality advisers on national security and the economy. But he says the verdict is still out on whether his Democratic administration will govern as liberally as he campaigned.

"I think his biggest challenge is to tame the left wing of his party," Quayle said in an interview with The Associated Press at Lake Tahoe.

"I guess we'll find out how `left' Obama really is because he's going to have to make some very tough decisions where he is either going to have to go with the left wing of his party or stare them down and govern more like (ex-president Bill) Clinton governed, which is sort of center-left. That jury is still out," said the Republican who served in the first Bush administration.

Quayle, who is playing golf at Lake Tahoe through the weekend at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, said Democrats had been out of power for eight years so "they just tried to throw everything out there and see what stuck and see what they wanted to do."

"To get elected, he clearly ran sort of center-left and we (the Bush-Quayle ticket) ran center-right. That's the normal situation. Same way with Reagan," he said in an interview after he finished his opening round Friday in a group with former Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps and television personality Maury Povich.

"Now I think they will have to make some tough decisions," Quayle said. "He knows the deficit is menacing. Whether he is willing to stare down the left wing of his party and say, `Guys, we've got to get this budget in order before we take on too many things,' I don't know. I think the jury is still out."

According to Dan Quayle, and DLC and Blue Dog Democrats, the problem lies with the very same people that gave Democrats control of Congress and the White House.

Has anyone here read what happened to the Kronstadt sailors in 1921? The very people that brought down the evil Tsar were themselves accused of being counter-revolutionaries. History repeats itself!

6. I just love how all these RW "geniuses" know so much about liberal thought.

Dan Quayle?

I thought they were desperate with re-polishing the Buchanon turd, but Dan Quayle? Seriously? :wtf:

I think our biggest problem may be in igniting a fire under centrist Dems and Conserva-Dems.

They've been re-writing history by claiming that Bush was too liberal. Never any acknowledgement that it was conservative "principles" that got us into this mess. Nope, anything that doesn't work is automatically "liberal."

think. Including about liberals. And what pressure they want on Obama and oher Democrats.

It was a lot of fun laughing at Dummya for saying things like "misunderestimated," wasn't it? Yet, he won twice and did exactly what he wanted for 8 years, nearly destroying the country and the environment in the process.

Dummya and Dan may well be dumb as they come, but the people behind them are crafty and, as best I can tell, amoral. A very dangerous combo.

Every time in my life that I misunderestimaed my enemy, I was wrong. So, I stopped doing that.

Just sayin'.

If that's not the case, then there would not be so many people smearing other DUers for using a critical eye toward the actions of our president, or insulting DUers for pointing out the fact that our congressional democrats are, by and large are weakened by their extreme entanglement with corporate money and the corporate lobby.

9. Well, Obama's campaign arm is running ads against the Centrist Dems, not the "Left" Dems.
Obama Campaign Arm Doubles Down, Targets House Dems On Health Care

Ignoring criticism - namely from Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid - that inter-party targeting was ineffective, Barack Obama's campaign arm is expanding its health care ad buy into the districts of key conservative House Democrats.

Late Friday night Organizing for America and the Democratic National Committee announced the expansion of the "It's Time" ad purchase, which uses personal stories of health care struggles to drive home the need for reform. The initial purchase was on national cable and in eight states with critical Democratic and moderate Republican Senators.

Now the scope of the campaign is expanding. The ad will appear in the media markets that overlap with the congressional districts of 15 members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Twelve of those districts belong to Democrats, including Rep. Zack Space (Ohio), Rep. John Barrow (Georgia), Rep. G.K. Butterfield (North Carolina), Rep. Jay Inslee (Washington), Rep. Mike Ross (Arkansas), Rep. Bart Gordon (Tennessee), Rep. Baron Hill (Indiana), Rep. Charlie Melancon (Louisiana), Rep. Mike Doyle (Pennsylvania), Rep. Jim Matheson (Utah), Rep. Bart Stupak (Michigan), Rep. Jerry McNerney (California).

The three Republican districts belong to Rep. Fred Upton (Michigan), Rep. Mary Bono Mack (California), and Rep. Greg Walden (Oregon)

For reform advocates, the Energy and Commerce Committee remains the toughest venue of the three committees handling health care in the House of Representatives, in large part because of the Blue Dog and moderate Democrats that make up its ranks. In making this purchase, Organizing for America either is worried about the committee's progress or -- much more likely -- sending a message that it has no problem applying pressure on fellow party members.

No representative is named in the ad. But every one of the aforementioned members will know that the spots are airing in their districts. The markets where the ad will run, according to the OFA/DNC press release, are: Savannah, Palm Springs, Seattle, Nashville, Bloomington, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Little Rock, Columbus, Marquette, Grand Rapids and Medford.

23. i'm sick of hearing this crap
WE, the left, are the problem? Because we want a fairer distribution of wealth in this country, a safety net for fellow citizens who fall on hard times, and to support our community? Because we understand that we're only as strong as our weakest link? Because we have a deep fundamental respect, concern, and empathy for fellow human beings?

These conservatives are very cold-hearted selfish self-centered people.

That page being: Corporations rule America and non-rich individual citizens can fuck off.

52. Kucinich? You mean Kucinich is the Big Problem for Obama?
Can ANYONE here imagine someone saying nine years ago "Bush's problem will be taming Right Wing republicans". No, because ALL repugs are "right wing". But it's now assumed that all Dems are supposed to be center-right while a few holdouts cling to nutty left wing ideas. It's sad to see conservatism triumph like this, but it has. Many younger Democrats see traditional Democratic values as "extreme" because they grew up in a post Reagan, post Fairness doctrine America.
