NATO: Fighter jet crashes at Afghan base

KABUL – A NATO official says a fighter jet has crashed at NATO's largest base in southern Afghanistan, the second major crash at the base in two days.

Capt. Ruben Hoorncelv, a spokesman for the NATO-led force, says a fighter jet crashed inside Kandahar Air Field during takeoff at 7:20 a.m. Afghanistan time Monday. The two-man crew ejected from the jet and are being treated at the base hospital.

Hoorncelv says there is no indication insurgent activity caused the crash, but that officials don't yet know why it went down. The jet caught fire and emergency personnel responded.

A Russian-owned civilian helicopter crashed at Kandahar Air Field on Sunday, killing 16 people on board.

2. Well, there's an insurgency on.
And it's summer, the height of 'fighting season.'

So several helicopters and fighter planes have 'mysteriously' crashed.

When you put two and two together...

4. In July of 2005.
A Chinook was shot down in Kunar while trying to rescue a Speical Forces unit. 16 died, eight airborne special forces units and eight Navy Seals.

I seem to recall the Russians finally threw in the towel when those US supplied Stingers started bringing down their aircraft in large numbers. I don't what's going on with this latest spate of crashes, but if the Talibs have found a way to counter our ability to provide air cover and resupply, we're in deep doo doo over there.

5. It was deep doo doo
even before we got there. That war is a money pit. IMO, if we're not smart and get out ASAP it will unravel us like it did the USSR.

It's just not the right time to try to harvest that Caspian Basin oil. If you make a deal with one tribe to run the pipeline across their territory, you probably won't be able to strike a deal with the tribe who claims the adjoining territory. Picking a tribal winner and bolstering them probably won't work because the grudges go back centuries. Leave the oil there for now, save us some money and lives. The oil will be there-- I doubt that even the Chinese will be able to get it.
