AP-GfK Poll: Great hopes for Obama fade to reality
Source: AP

By NANCY BENAC and TREVOR TOMPSON

WASHINGTON (AP) - That was fast. The hope and optimism that washed over the country in the opening months of Barack Obama's presidency are giving way to harsh realities.

An Associated Press-GfK Poll shows that a majority of Americans are back to thinking that the country is headed in the wrong direction after a fleeting period in which more thought it was on the right track.

Obama still has a solid 55 percent approval rating - better than Bill Clinton and about even with George W. Bush six months into their presidencies - but there are growing doubts about whether he can succeed at some of the biggest items on his to-do list. And there is a growing sense that he is trying to tackle too much too soon.

The number of people who think Obama can improve the economy
is down a sobering 19 percentage points from the euphoric days just before his inauguration. Ditto for expectations about creating jobs. Also down significantly: the share of people who think he can reduce the deficit, remove troops from Iraq and improve respect for the U.S. around the world, all slipping 15 points.

1. Of course. The media got their wish.
If you keep telling the American people he's failing, sooner or later, they'll start buying it.

7. I see their hard work has paid off!
Now, that's a self fullfilling prophecy if I ever saw one at work...

They've been saying his numbers were coming down since the day after inauguration day.
Glad to see their determination paid off, and that the American public still buys propaganda,
if it is cloaked in "News".

8. This just in...Americans are coming to realize that we might need to vote all of the obstucting bums
out before we can really get change. That and change the rules about corporate bribes, where lobbyists outnumber the congress 3 to 1...where tens of millions of dollars are doled out to thwart the public interest.

We are not disappointed in Obama...we are disappointed in our legislators.

9. Americans are stupid. That is my mantra today and every day from now on until the Republicans are
totally booted out of office if not the Country. I can't stand it anymore. I am serious. The media is also to blame for keeping Americans stupid. The Government needs to shape up also. Can start by riding it of conservative nutbags.

16. The question is who in the fuck think that the republicans more tax cuts for the rich is the answer
Edited on Tue Jul-21-09 08:05 PM by GreenTea
Only republican nut-jobs and idiot moderates who are really fucking republicans anyway...

The republican proved for the past eight years that tax cut for the rich & corporations, allowing corporations deregulation and to do as they pleased, corporate subsidies (welfare) out sourcing jobs, hiding money offshore tax incentives & bailouts for eight years under their watch was certainly not the answer and that's all the republicans have to offer more of the same...So they just say NO to keep things for the rich & corporations as the same status quo.

And republicans have always said (it's their ideology government help for corporations above people) which translates to fuck the working class tax payers who desperately need a public option for health Care for ALL!

17. Good.
People need to stop living in a fantasy-land. Now when things turn around (oh, and they will), Obama will get more credit as the chicken littles are already whining like morons, even though not a single person in this country believed we be turning the corner in just 6 months from the worst economic collapse since the depression. Maybe this country really should fail as people here are too stupid to live.

20. I don't know if I credit this poll but it's just natural. We were on an incredible high
when he was inaugurated. It was great but expecting that high to become the new normal isn't reasonable.
