Mexican immigration to US hits 10-year low: study

(AFP) – 9 hours ago

WASHINGTON — The number of Mexican immigrants who came to the United States has fallen sharply, hitting a 10-year low in the 12 months ending in March, a report showed Wednesday.

Immigration from Mexico to the United States, especially illegal immigration, began to drop off in 2006 and continued its downward slide into this year, said a report by the Pew Hispanic Center, which looked at population surveys from both countries and US law enforcement data.

Between March 2008 to March 2009, the "estimated annual inflow of immigrants from Mexico was lower than at any point during the decade," bottoming out at about 175,000 immigrants, the report said, citing data from the US Census Bureau's Current Population Survey.

In the previous two years, the number of immigrants crossing from Mexico to the United States was around twice that figure, the report said.

2. This is good news. I wonder if it is due to the economy tanking or

or due to greater vigilance at the borders.

I've heard all sorts of figures as to how many people from Mexico and other nations are here illegally.

from 10 to 20+ million. What are the best estimates and who did them? Anyone know?

5. There are no jobs here.. we are in free-fall.. that's why they are returning
..the way it's going.. in a few months.. our elected leaders will have reduced the standard of living in the U.S. to equal with Mexico.

As a matter of fact.. I was thinking about going to Mexico.. I heard you can see a doctor there for a few dollars.

10. Here and there
I've lived in both, and there are advantages to each. Yes, doctor visits are a lot less than in the U.S., and dental work runs about 1/3 of the U.S. price. Wal-Mart and HomeDepot are both in Mexico, so you still have your supply line of cheap Chinese crap. Food seems to be fresher there (maybe because that is where a lot of produce sold in the U.S. originates), but don't expect to find Polish sausage or Jewish rye bread. They do have imported high end food items, but mostly from Spain and Italy. And if you don't have a job anyway, the beaches are nicer there.

7. That is too bad.
Millions and millions of dollar are deposited every month in the Social Security and Medicare pot that is taken from their paychecks and then matched by their employers and placed in the public coffers. If they are using a fake SS# or are not documented they can never retrieve these monies for themselves.

The government now calculates the annual funds collected from these workers and they must be shitting in their pants that these funds are diminishing.

8. This is the other issue I don't get
These people are coming here illegally. There is a process to become a naturalized US citizen. Why the immediate calls of xenophobe when this is pointed out. These people have come here and depressed wages in all types of trades and that is fact. Why don't they fight against their own corrupt governments instead of coming here illegally and remitting much of what they earn back home?

This is supported wholeheartedly by the US Chamber of Commerce because they know it depresses wages. Progressives and liberal minded people should be supporting unionization instead of cheering on illegal immigration, which harms their stadard of living. I don't understand why people support positions that harm their own self interest.

Let's support these people to go back to their home country and fight against their corrupt governments so that positive change can come to their friends and families where they live.
