6 shot, wounded in drive-by at Texas Southern
Source: Associated Press

HOUSTON – Six people were shot and wounded at a community rally on the Texas Southern University campus Wednesday in what police believe was a gang-related drive-by shooting, a school spokeswoman said.

Witnesses told police that one car drove by an outdoor event on campus, where a popular Houston rapper was promoting voter registration, and opened fire, TSU spokeswoman Eva Pickens said.

Six people were shot, including one male student. They were being treated at hospitals for serious, but non-life threatening injuries, Pickens said.

Campus police believe the incident resulted from a rivalry between two gangs, one from Missouri City, a suburb southwest of Houston, and the other from Fresno, a small town outside Missouri City, she said.

Among the hosts of the community rally was Houston City Councilman Peter Brown, who is running for mayor in November's election.

Lucinda Gwinn, who manages Brown's mayoral campaign, said the rally included a concert by rapper Trae the Truth and was organized by TSU, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, Brown and other council members and officials to promote voter registration.

Gwinn said she had no details on the shootings, but was dismayed that "an effort for bringing a very positive message to the community" would end in violence.

Maybe if we actually took an initiative to outlaw that rap shit, as well as public gatherings, gang-bangers wouldn't have a reason to shoot each other with their (illegally obtained) guns.

:sarcasm:

17. If we had cameras in all public areas
a national database on all the biometric data of all citizens (DNA, fingerprints, voice patterns, etc). Mandatory ID cards that had to be presented to travel any great distances (say more than one mile from your government issued place of residence), check points with armed guards and tracking devices placed in everyones skulls then we stop these tragedies. Or at least avenge the victims.

Won't someone please, think of the children!

You know, fascism isn't that bad, if they promise us security we should be willing to trade our rights for that.

18. These were criminals even if guns were totally banned
They would probably still find some way to acquire guns or other weapons and perpetrate violence

14. "When you're a jet"...
When you're a Jet,
You're a Jet all the way
From your first cigarette
To your last dyin' day.

When you're a Jet,
If the spit hits the fan,
You got brothers around,
You're a family man!".

Funny thing is... guns and gun laws were a lot more accessible and relaxed back then but they fought with knives chains and broken bottles.

10. There was probably nobody in that crowd old enough to get a concealed weapons permit
The minimum age is 21, and I believe guns are prohibited on campus anyway.

20. Also people with cars
or people with planes, or people with knives, or people with bats, or people with sarin gas, or people with pieces of string, or people with cigarettes people who use substandard building materials.

What's the common element in all these scenarios? Guns of course. Ban 'em, prevent all deaths forever.

26. Yep
People killed with guns are by the latest estimates over 56% more dead than those killed by other means.

Losing a family member to a drunk driver is hardly even a tragedy, nothing worth getting worked up over. But if that same family member had been shot by a drunk man, that would be a tragedy.

27. No, I'm pretty sure budding murderers
would be deterred by the potential fine they could get (in addition to the death penalty) for breaking gun control laws.

It's bizarre but most criminals refuse to break multiple laws at a time. Rape? No problem. Rape and double parking? No way, that's serious. Murder? Big deal. Murder and violating an unconstitutional ban on firearms? Uh uh, not going to do it.

21. Guns will do that to you. Last time I held a gun in my hands I almost did a drive-by too
Guns are more harmful than marijuana and should be banned.

28. Many religions attach human qualities to inanimate objects
As gun-control has many elements of a religion it's not surprising that they do the same.

Also, religions are very hostile to facts that contradict their edicts, view anyone who disagrees with them as evil rather than merely having a different opinion, and try to force their beliefs on others (often using the law to do so) all the while claiming to be unfairly persecuted by everyone they are trying to strip of their rights.

Hm . . .
