Alaska governor loses ground among Republicans, white evangelicals

By Jon Cohen and Philip Rucker
updated 2:11 a.m. MT, Fri., July 24, 2009

WASHINGTON - As Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin prepares for the next stage of her political career, a majority of Americans hold an unfavorable view of her, and there is broad public doubt about her leadership skills and understanding of complex issues, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Last year's Republican vice presidential nominee remains a deeply polarizing figure, and there are warning signs for her as she emerges as a possible contender for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. While she is still widely popular among those in her party, she has lost ground among Republicans generally and among the white evangelicals who are so critical in the early presidential primaries.

Overall, the new poll found that 53 percent of Americans view Palin negatively and 40 percent see her in positive terms, her lowest level in Post-ABC polling since she first appeared on the national stage last summer as Sen. John McCain's running mate.

The dip in Palin's favorability comes as she gets ready to leave office Sunday with about 18 months remaining in her term and plans to turn her attention to national politics. Palin, 45, has said she intends to campaign for other like-minded candidates, and speculation has been rampant that she may seek the GOP nomination to oppose President Obama.

"40 percent see her in positive terms" - It is still a bit stunning to see that amount of support for Phailin. The diehard 17 Percenters who still feel that Chimpy belongs on Mt. Rushmore, I'll give her. But where do the remaining 23 percent come from? Birthers, Helicopter Wolf Hunters for Jesus, the Flat Earth Society.....?

3. You're talking about the people who gave us AWOL Bush.
They have no standards other than:
1) Serve the corporate masters.
2) Screech about "family values" to appease the hateful "Christian" wing.

20. Only a dead fish goes with the flow.

No, Sarah, most things go with the flow, literally and figuratively. Which was the point of the quote you tried to rip off, but only mangled instead, namely, even a dead fish can go with the flow.

Beauty fades. Teh stupid is forever.

9. Fox News headline was: "Is Quitting the New Winning?"
Yep, I couldn't believe that FOX News would actually use that as their headline after her strange press conference a few weeks ago. Only a hopelessly biased and right-wing TV channel would attempt to equate the sudden resignation from her post as governor as a potentially "brilliant" strategy, and possibly a "smart" way for her to spring board into the 2012 elections.

...but this latest poll suggests that the American people are not so easily fooled as those FOX commentators would like...

21. I don't watch Fox. But, while channel surfing, I passed someone on Fox saying
her resignation may turn out to be the smartest political move ever.

IMO, the people who loved her at first sight last August helped changed the polls from negative to positive in McCain's favor, albeit briefly. And they may never stop loving her.

Most people who were favorably impressed initially, or simply willing to give her a chance, though, changed their minds as soon as they saw who and what she was and will not be back. "You can't unring a bell."

23. I think the other 23 percent....
comes from moderate Republicans who feel it is their duty to view her positively compared to the evil Left. I think they see her in relative terms. They probably don't like her much, but they sympathise with her because she draws the fire of the Democrats.

Whatever it is, I hope she runs in 2012. That would be over a year's worth of awesome entertainment I may never again see in my lifetime.

24. new torture tactic
How this woman has an approval rating over 1% is beyond me. If the CIA is looking for an alternative to water boarding, I would suggest playing a recording of a Sarah Palin speech.

28. Absolutely amazed...
That her support could be THAT high.

It'd almost be fun to sit and watch that freak show take place. (Palin actually getting elected president.) I mean it would suck to watch her destroy the country, but The Colbert Report and The Daily Show would definitely be must see tv.
