ATLANTA — Police say former boxing champion Vernon Forrest has been shot and killed in an apparent robbery.

Atlanta Police Sgt. Lisa Keyes said in an e-mail Sunday that Forrest may have been robbed and was shot "multiple times in the back" Saturday night in Atlanta.

Keyes says there are no suspects.

Mark Guilbeau, an investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office, said an autopsy is planned for Sunday.

Former WBC champ Forrest killed in shooting

<snip>

WSB Radio in Atlanta first reported the shooting, citing a police spokesman. Forrest, who was 38, was an Atlanta native. He was shot seven or eight times as he chased at least two men who had tried to steal his Jaguar as he put air in his tires at an Atlanta gas station, Lt. Keith Meadows said, according to the radio station.

But Forrest had a gun and confronted the men, police said.

"The victim and suspect became involved in a brief foot chase," Meadows said. "At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the two of them. The victim was shot at least once in the head."

6. Of course it did.
Technology always emboldens and enables. Sometimes for good, sometimes for ill. This has been the case since man mastered fire.

7. Soapbox alert!
shareunited: "Hey everyone! Ignore that millions of Americans are responsible gun-owners and 99% of weapons are never used in a crime! Crime and accidents are reason enough to give up your rights! The right to defend yourself, hunt, have a collection or hobby isn't democratic! Give into fear!"

10. This isn't about the NRA.
This is a RKBA Democrat warning others not to give in to the politics of fear and ignorance.

"Now Carry On Dying" :eyes:

12. Fear and ignorance favor arming every man, woman and child.
And urging everyone to shoot first or get shot.

Guns in the populace leads to only one place: The End Of Civilization.

13. Then my thread jacking friend the swiss are fucked..
so is canada, finland, and every other place where weapons are available. I guess there was no murder before guns?

This premise is silly and has no basis in fact, current or historical.

14. Why would you think that the death of a prominent person by gun violence
isn't a legitimate opportunity to once again call America out on its willful tolerance of a great and self-inflicted ailment?

23. A person killed another person, swords, guns, dynamite
none work without a person taking action. You people are to lazy to address root cause so you talk about gun control.. The real question is the difference in the numbers of acts in Switzerland, canada and the US. The answer is complex and requires real work to fix. A simple gun ban is not real work, it is look good feel good for people who are unwilling to address root cause.

24. Dynamite is already strictly controlled and swords demand too much work.
The convenient killing power of guns is a threat to us all.

17. You're misguided. Not every culture abuses gun ownership.
In some cultures, gun ownership is a right AND a privilege -- but not an unquestionable ""given."

"Guns in the populace leads to only one place: The End Of Civilization."

You are aware that guns have been among the populace of virtually the entire world for over 500 years now?

Where's the end?? :rofl:

25. But now there is the NRA whose mission is to arm society to the teeth.
And to characterize guns and ammo as a panacea rather than the scourge which they are.

And I still think your entire argument is based on emotions and no facts.

Also, I fail to see how personal arms will "End civilization" care to explain how when even nukes, famine, natural disaster and war haven't pulled it off?

That's why when the gun grabbers kept posting this comment, "Never miss an opportunity to turn someone's tragedy into your personal political soapbox." on every defensive gun post that I made, I started doing likewise.

3. ATL is crime ridden
Edited on Sun Jul-26-09 10:02 AM by Mimosa
I'm pretty weak and not much of a boxer. Access to guns may help some of us defend ourselves if somebody breaks into our homes too.

I think crime has been increasing because many millions of low skill but steady jobs have been exported. I was brought up in ATL and later lived nearly 20 years in New Orleans. Both cities have suffered terribly from the loss of small manufacturing plants.

4. Yes.... I was touched several times by gun crimes
when I lived in Atlanta... Some seemingly random events catching friends, likely drivebys or burglaries gone very wrong--others, perhaps naively thinking they could safely walk home from their jobs after dark in Buckhead or other seemingly "tawny" neighborhoods.

Yes, it happens everywhere, but Atlanta does seem to be bearing a major brunt of the trend.

11. Too late to edit, more information:Vernon Forrest Shot And Killed
<snip>
"At this point we have a general description of at least two black males driving a red Monte Carlo," Meadows said, according to the report.

Police said the suspects likely didn't know Forrest, whose girlfriend's young son was in the car when he was shot.
<snip>
Forrest was also known for his charitable side because of his involvement in Destiny's Child, a group home that provides support and guidance for mentally challenged adults. Forrest had often talked about how the struggles of people he helped support provided him with inspiration when he fought.
