Susan Bayh an issue in fight over health care
Source: Indianapolis Star

"But for Bayh, health care isn't just the latest high-stakes political fight in Congress. It's also a substantial part of his family's income.

Bayh contends the $2.1 million that his wife, Susan, earned from public health-care companies from 2006 to 2008 represents no conflict of interest. Questions persist, however, for at least two reasons. First, Evan Bayh has been unclear about his positions on many issues related to health-care reform. Second, there's the timing of Susan Bayh's rapid rise into corporate governance.

Susan Bayh, who was a midlevel lawyer for the politically active Eli Lilly and Co. while her husband was governor of Indiana, did not serve on the board of a single public health-care company until it was clear her husband was about to ascend to the U.S. Senate. Only one month before Evan Bayh was elected to the Senate in a landslide vote, his wife was appointed to serve on the board of what would become the nation's largest health insurance company -- and arguably the company with the most at stake in the health-care reform debate."

For anyone who wonders why a "democrat" like Bayh votes consistantly with health-care providers.

1. Why do they insist on calling it a
public health-care company . . Is it to confuse the issue?

2. The Star is a notorious right-wing rag, so yea.
I'm guessing that they mean "publicly-traded" but being the Star, it was most likely deliberate.

I hesitate to post anything from them but this story seemed relevant.

5. The Bayh's
This is what's wrong with the system, power breeds greed and corruption and these Senators who are against Health-care Reform and a PUBLIC OPTION are deep in the "hip pockets" of those who oppose it. Time for term limits, finance reform and a third party!

6. Welcome to DU!
I'd put finance reform at the top of that list.

Take away the incumbant's ability to raise obscene amounts of cash and IMO the term limits thing will take care of itself.

8. My wife and I were watching Bill Moyer
and he covered Healthcare and the RW hate talk that comes from Fox, et al and how it gets acted upon by morons that listen to them. She was stunned. She's a Dem but doesn't follow too close. I said, yes, that is how they are. Sickening huh?

We started talking about Healthcare and how our Senator, Ben Nelson, is basically not even a Dem, and why that would be, and what he does to actually be a Dem. I didn't know.

But this a perfect story because it's at the Crux of the major breaks between Dems and Pigs, and the 'Blue Dogs' that betray their party regularly.

The DNC needs to have a few of the big Issues (Healthcare is one) listed as non-negotiable. You back it (the President) or you get NO party funding. Start mobilizing the Dems.

I know bloggers here and all over Progressive and Liberal sites are calling for single payer. The DNC should recognize that and force these sold out traitors to get back in line with their party.

Make taking money from lobbyists irrelevant. If they can fund their own campaign with that blood money, then go for it, but the DNC is going to back and fund someone else.

Just a thought.

11. Hadassah Lieberman's lobbyist ties are a similar yoke upon Sen. Joe's neck . . .
she's been an advocate for various medical care and pharmaceutical corporations for decades.

Questions about her influence, and concerns about Joe's improprieties, have bounced around for as long as he's sat in the Senate.
