Bus blast kills 6 paramilitary soldiers in India

NEW DELHI — Suspected Maoist rebels in eastern India blew up a bus with a roadside bomb, killing six paramilitary soldiers, police said Monday.

Another three Central Reserve Police Force soldiers were wounded in Sunday's attack in Dantewada district of Chattisgarh state — a rebel stronghold about 350 miles (560 kilometers) south of the state capital, local police constable Yashwant Singh said.

The attackers escaped after detonating the bomb, which was believed to be a land mine they were able to explode from a distance, Singh said.

The rebels, who say they are inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, have been fighting for more than three decades in several Indian states, demanding land and jobs for agricultural laborers and the poor.
