11 Suspicious Letters With White Powder Sent to N.J. Government Offices

Monday, July 27, 2009

NEWARK, N.J. — The FBI is investigating 11 suspicious letters containing a white powder that were sent to various New Jersey government offices this month.

The letters have been received at police departments and government offices throughout northern New Jersey. The first one came July 17.

Letters have been received in Totowa, Clifton, Wayne, Ringwood, Fair Lawn and Woodland Park.

All the letters are being tested. The FBI says first three letters tested came back negative for biological agents and no injuries have been reported.

Letters containing white anthrax powder killed five people in the fall of 2001. Some were processed at a postal facility in Hamilton, just outside Trenton. Two workers there contracted the skin form of anthrax, but both recovered.

2. Sounds like a new form of harassment of the authorities.
Is sending a letter with white flour in it a crime yet? Will it be soon?

7. It most certainly is a crime.....
It is harassment a threat and basically terrorism. (I am of course not talking about sending a sample of some foot powder or some thing that leaks but intentional threats)

This is no different then if I rob you with an airsoft gun. It is still considered assault/robbery with a deadly weapon since you consider it a deadly weapon (as it should be)

These folks are no different then terrorists who actually kill. The end result of fear, terror and changing ones life is the same.

8. But the story says nothing about threats or demands.
I understand your points, but it sounds like it would be difficult to make a case based on the perpetrators intent.

I remember back in the 70s there was a rash of fake bomb threats, which drove various people nuts, but in the end they wound up just ignoring them, and after a while they stopped.

3. Probably just anthrax.
Something similar happened shortly after 9/11. The letters seemed to target Democrats. A few people died, but it wasn't that big a deal.

The FBI investigated a rather bizarre right-winger who worked with anthrax and was all but convicted by the media, but nothing ever came of it.

In the end, no one was convicted, and the story died. Apparently, it wasn't as important as protecting Afghanistan from Afghanis or giving Bill Gates government welfare.

Nothing to see here. Move along.
