(Senator) Vitter defends Southern influence in GOP, slams Voinovich
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana slammed fellow Republican George Voinovich Wednesday for saying the GOP's problems stem from the fact that it is "being taken over by Southerners," calling the Ohio senator "a moderate, really wishy-washy."

"I'm on the side of conservatives getting back to core conservative values," Vitter told the Washington Times. "There are a lot of us from the South who hold those values, which I think the party is supposed to be about. We strayed from them in the past few years, and that's why we performed so badly in the national elections."

"(Voinovich is…) a moderate, really wishy-washy," he said.

Voinovich, who has decided not to run for re-election next year, told a newspaper in his home state that Southern dominance of the GOP was hurting the party elsewhere.

"We got too many Jim DeMints and Tom Coburns," Voinovich told the Columbus Dispatch Monday. "It's the Southerners….

Oklahoma doesn't really consider itself part of the South. But "what the hell has that got to do with Ohio?" :eyes:

6. Geographically, maybe not
Although its close neighbor Texas is certainly considered part of the south. But, having been to Oklahoma many more times than I care to admit, it is certainly as redneck, for lack of a better term, as anywhere I have ever been. No offense.

Texas is its own altered state..but then there's that NEastern corner that should be included in the redneck circular swath of OK & Arkansas.

Palin Country.

5. As long as the Republicans believe they aren't conservative enough
they'll be stamping their ticket to minority status. I'm not like some people around here who think that the majority of Americans are "progressive" (however we all choose to define that term), but we as a country are certainly not nearly as conservative as people like Haley Barbour, DeMint and others think we are.

22. ROFL . I was born a Democrat
My dad was pretty active in the local politics. I spent the first five years of my life in a house full of adults (we lived with my Grandma and aunt and uncles) - all Democrats. It feels like all of my 57 years have been spent bashing the GOP because I never heard anyone say anything good about them my whole life :-).

Dems to the bone. I'm just a bit younger than you I guess. But I did always want to be a Flower Child..anti-establishment..Funny that as I grew into real adulthood, everything my mom said about the GOP remained true.

Actually I've never heard anything good about the GOP either.

Nice to meet you.

45. Flower Child, it's more than just an era - it's in your heart ..awwww that's beautiful ..
Edited on Wed Jul-29-09 10:53 PM by Blaze Diem
I actually became a florist. My profession. I could do it every day for the rest of my life & be perfectly content.
Who knew ??

My father passed away 2 years ago. he was 84, an airplane mechanic in the army/air force. He was a piano player..and a farmer. Salt of the earth. Many of that generation were.

The day the Trade Center Towers Fell he watched and quietly said, "Bush did this". I never questioned his wisdom and believe him to this day.

I also miss talking politics, with my mom, now 84 and in a retirement home. She needs round the clock care but is the first to start the political discussion whenever I call. She keeps up to date as best she can but its not the same since we are on opposite borders of the country.. I miss those times also.

Have a good night.
peace

19. Voinovich was the only GOPer I've ever voted for. He's a decent man. Sorry to see him leave a party
that needs him badly! HA... He is right, and wow, he actually said what many of us DEMS say, that the Senate right-wing nuts like DeMint & Coburn are the nastiest people, and here a sitting Republican US Senator said it!!!!

SWEET!

A toast to Voinovich for sometimes growing a spine against W, and now for saying this. I hope though, sorry Mr. Voinovich (but maybe you want it to happen too), that another Democrat like your junior colleague, wins the seat!

34. I always thought Voinovich was a non descript political figure...
When the powers that be were looking to eviscerate Cleveland after the Kucinich years, they choose George in the name of business first, business second and business third. He said yep and let Cleveland Trust and Sam Miller rob the city blind along with the help of The Plain Dealer while he blindly looked the other way...

You know why the school systems in Ohio are in the business of raising money via the ballot box and not in the business of educating our childre? Ask Voinocih about the HB920 that he ioned to decouple millage for schools from the rate of inflation.

I never voted for that prick and never will...

As a Virginian, I'm now proud to view Southern conservatives with the lofty contempt formerly enjoyed only by states North of me. I hope Southern Republicans win, but that the GOP manages to limp along as a regional party that pretends to be in touch with the rest of the nation (as they already do).
