Recession Eases in Most Parts of US: Fed Beige Book
Source: CNBC/AP

The economy is finally beginning to show signs of stabilizing in some regions of the country, bolstering hopes of a broader-based recovery this year.

A Federal Reserve snapshot of economic conditions issued Wednesday found that most of the Fed's 12 regions indicated either that the recession was easing or that economic activity had "begun to stabilize, albeit at a low level."

The economy remains fragile. But the fact that some Fed regions reported signs of activity beginning to level out raises hope that the recession, which started in December 2007, is drawing to a close.

Four Fed regions — New York, Cleveland, Kansas City and San Francisco— pointed to "signs of stabilization," the survey said. Two regions — Chicago and St. Louis — reported that the pace of economic declined appeared to be "moderating."

Five other regions — Boston, Philadelphia, Richmond, Atlanta and Dallas — described activity as "slow," "subdued" or "weak." Only one region — Minneapolis — indicated that its downward slide in economic activity had worsened.

3. I'm looking at a job in one of the stabilization/moderating cities. Atlanta is crapping out.
We elect a Republican governor for the first time in 120+ years and our booming economy goes "South."

We got what we deserved.

6. I was in ATL in the mid to late 90's..
and it was crapping out then. Unlimited sprawl, dangerous crime, and Buckhead was charging 20$ cover in some places. I knew then it was in a death spiral.

8. Buckhead is a dead zone now.
They closed all of the seedy clubs that attracted posers from the suburbs and asshole GA Tech students and now there is nothing there.

This year they tore down half the area and are going to build a multi-billion dollar mini-Rodeo drive for our rich Republicans.

However, my wife and I have been solidly employed here since the 80's (except for a slow patch at the end of Bush I - go figure).

I just want to leave.

Born here, won't die here.

As for the sprawl, people I know coming from L.A. feel perfectly comfortable here.

We paid a premium for a house inside the Perimeter and it was worth every penny.

I am Not driving 1 hour or more to work like the suckers that live in the 'burbs.

9. Very interesting...
Haven't been back there since I left. Left in 99 and had zero regrets. Never looked back.

5. Yeah, I'm sure it's true; but most of the population hasn't noticed because they're too busy ...
looking for work, trying to figure out how to pay bills, and being evicted from their houses. Once they're not be distracted in such ways, I'm sure that they'll notice that the recession is easing.
