At least two Civil Guard officers have been killed by a car bomb blast outside a barracks in the west of the Spanish island of Majorca, officials say.

The vehicle parked near the facility in Palmanova exploded shortly before 1400 (1200 GMT), close to Marivent Palace, where Spain's royal family is staying.

The blast comes a day after a car bomb targeted a barracks in the mainland city of Burgos, injuring 46 people.

Police blamed the Basque separatist group, Eta, for Wednesday's attack.

4. UPDATE | BBC: Eta responsible for police deaths
Page last updated at 04:42 GMT, Sunday, 9 August 2009 05:42 UK

The Basque separatist group, Eta, has claimed responsibility for a series of recent bombings in Spain, including one which killed two Civil Guards in July.

In a statement sent to the Basque newspaper, Gara, Eta said it was also behind a car bomb attack which killed a police inspector two months ago.

It said the policeman, Eduardo Puelles Garcia, was a "despicable torturer".

Eta has been blamed for more than 820 deaths during its campaign for an independent Basque homeland in Spain.
