Albania plans to legalize gay marriages

(Tirana, Albania) Albania’s governing Democrats have proposed a law allowing same-sex civil weddings in the small, predominantly Muslim country.

An announcement on the government Web site Thursday said the bill “may spark debate” but was needed to stop discrimination against gay couples. Current law only recognizes heterosexual marriages.

Prime Minister Sali Berisha said the move followed requests from rights groups. His Democrats, who control 74 of parliament’s 140 seats, are expected to easily pass the law.

You beat me to expressing my FIRST thought on the above....that conservatives in MOST European countries are more progressive than our Dems..... How humiliating. How embarrassing. I cannot believe the WILLFUL ignorance of this country, and the mindless pride "those" people take in their ignorant bigotry. Ms Bigmack

20. As you will recall, Gov. Howard Dean refused to sign a same-sex marriage bill.
waiting, instead, for a separate-but-equal/civil union bill. Now, since then, I know Howard's changed, and I really love him, but facts are facts.

Even setting that aside, Albania is a country, NH amounts to a national province. Not the same thing, obviously. And while I applaud the Dems in NH and Maine - and everywhere, frankly - for supporting SSM, you KNOW the Democratic Party could do MUCH BETTER with regard to gay/civil rights than they are doing, and when countries like ALBANIA are adopting civil rights protections and a "progressive" state like California is destroying civil rights, you have a sad, sad situation on your hands.

14. Didn't expect this from the right-wing party.
The political spectrum is very different in the former socialist European countries. The left parties are mainly ex-communist, and the communists were socially backward, except in East Germany.

than the US. It's nearly a laugh, but it's really a cry.

Only 25 years since Hoxha, the ultra-conservative long-time dictator of Albania died, and Albanians may legalize same sex marriage soon.

Good on you, Albania.
