Rove Says His Role in Prosecutor Firings Was Small
By DAVID JOHNSTON
Published: July 30, 2009

WASHINGTON — Karl Rove, addressing the dismissal of federal prosecutors in 2006 when he was a top adviser to President George W. Bush, said in a recent interview that he had sought status reports about vacancies in prosecutors’ offices, pushed subordinates to find a job for a former deputy and monitored plans for dismissals as they evolved after Mr. Bush’s re-election in 2004.

But Mr. Rove said he played only a peripheral role in the removal of the prosecutors, even though he did, as previously disclosed, turn over to the Justice Department complaints about the United States attorney in New Mexico and openly favor a former associate for a prosecutor’s job in Arkansas.

Mr. Rove, who on Thursday completed two days of testimony in a closed session with investigators from the House Judiciary Committee, said in the interview that he could not answer one of the central unanswered questions that the panel has hoped to resolve: whether it was the White House that directed the Justice Department to remove the prosecutors.

.................

"I was the recipient of complaints," Mr. Rove said, referring to criticisms of Mr. Iglesias he had picked up from party officials in New Mexico. "I passed them on to Harriet Miers to pass on to the Justice Department."

4. Gotta ask---
How is it legal or proper for the political adviser to the President to be involved in the inner workings of the Justice Department in even "a small way"?
