Air India Plans To Cancel Order For 6 Boeing 777s

NEW DELHI -(Dow Jones)- Loss-making national carrier Air India Friday said it's planning to cancel orders for six Boeing Co. (BA) 777 planes as it tries to cut costs amid a worldwide slowdown in air travel.

"We are in dialogue with Boeing on this subject," Jitendra Bhargava, Air India's executive director for corporate communications, told Dow Jones Newswires by phone from Mumbai.

"No decision on cancellation has been taken as yet."

Air India, Jet Airways (India) Ltd. and other carriers are either deferring or canceling deliveries of new planes as the global economic slowdown crimps demand for air travel.

Jet Airways said last month it won't take delivery of eight aircraft this fiscal year that began April 1. Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. has also deferred delivery of 32 of 48 Airbus A320 planes that were due to arrive in late 2008 and 2009.
