Alaska lawmakers override Palin veto

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Alaska Legislature has overridden former Gov. Sarah Palin's veto of more than $28 million in federal stimulus funds for energy projects.

The override on Monday came despite a last-hour Facebook plea from Palin.

She warned that accepting the stimulus funds would "chip away at Alaska's right to chart its own course."

Palin initially said she would not accept about one-third of the $930 million designated by President Barack Obama for Alaska, citing "strings" that could bind the state to federal mandates.

JUNEAU, Alaska, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin defended her veto of $28.6 million in federal stimulus money as the Legislature voted to override it.

The Alaska Legislature voted Monday to override Palin's rejection of federal stimulus money.

Alaska requires three-quarters of the Legislature to cancel a governor's veto of a budget appropriation and the 45-14 vote was exactly enough, the Anchorage Daily News reported. Several attempts to override other Palin vetoes in Monday's special session failed.

"As governor, I did my utmost to warn our legislators that accepting stimulus funds will further tie Alaska to the federal government and chip away at Alaska's right to chart its own course," she said.
