A 24-year-old suspected of vandalizing the Colorado Democratic Party headquarters is free on bail this afternoon.

The arrest of Maurice Joseph Schwenkler, known in some circles as the transgendered activist Ariel Attack, sparked chatter on a network of anarchist websites as friends today raised money for bail and legal fees.

Schwenkler was released on $5,000 bail and stands accused of felony criminal mischief for allegedly shattering windows at the Colorado Democratic Party headquarters in Denver with the help of a still-at-large accomplice.

Pleas on several anarchist sites such as Queers Against Obama and Infoshop News described Schwenkler as a "transgendered activist" who uses the name Ariel Attack.

Benjamin Yager, who said he posted the solicitation for the Free Ariel Attack Fund, declined to comment until he could speak with Schwenkler. He said the money raised will cover bail and legal costs.

This person was doing one of two things. Either the person was making some attempt to engage in 'false flag' shenanigans, or the person was genuinely moved to attack the Democratic Party as a form of protest against health care reform. Either thing indicates a considerable degree of confusion....

The political identity of alleged window basher Maurice Joseph Schwenkler — once a matter that spawned bickering and accusations between Colorado liberals and conservatives — became clearer Wednesday.

Anarchist websites lit up across the country as Schwenkler's friends asked for cash to bail out the 24-year-old, who stands accused of felony criminal mischief and was described in the solicitations as "a transgendered anarchist" using the name Ariel Attack. Schwenkler was released from jail on $5,000 bail Wednesday.

Republicans later rejoiced when it was revealed Schwenkler had worked for a Democratic candidate in 2008 and alleged the vandalism was an attempt to frame conservative opponents to Obama's proposal. Now it appears possible that Schwenkler ascribes to neither political ideology.

Bash Back is a group of radical gay, lesbian and transgender individuals who began organizing in 2007 to protest the Republican and Democratic national conventions last year, according to its website.
