Arizona Daily StarClosure of the eight-year-old Arizona KidsCare Parents program is scheduled
to begin Sept. 30. The program is a state-federal partnership operated by the
Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) and parents paid a monthly
premium of up to $100 depending on their income.
Letters to the 9,500 affected parents who are losing their insurance went out
about two weeks ago.
“We’re in a severe budget crisis and the legislature decided not to continue the
funding past Sept. 30,” said Monica Coury, assistant director of intergovernmental
relations for AHCCCS. “Obviously there will be individuals who have health care needs.
If you have a chronic illness, for example, this is obviously a very difficult situation.”
The cuts are a result of cost-trimming by the Arizona Legislature, which struggled to
close a $1.6 billion budget deficit in its 2009-2010 budget. The closure of KidsCare
Parents represents about $7 million in state money, AHCCCS officials said Tuesday.
