Blast kills Afghan deputy chief of intelligence

(AP) – 13 minutes ago

KABUL — Officials say an explosion has killed Afghanistan's deputy chief of intelligence.

Sayed Ahmad Safi, the spokesman for the governor of Laghman province, says Dr. Abdullah Laghmani died in the blast. Laghmani is the No. 2 at Afghanistan's intelligence service, known as the National Directorate for Security.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, tells The Associated Press that a suicide bomber had targeted Laghmani.

The blast occurred during the inauguration of a new mosque in the city of Mehterlam in Laghman — 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of Kabul.

MEHTAR LAM, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A suicide car bomber struck a funeral in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, and a police source said senior officials were among the dead and wounded.

A spokesman for the governor of Laghman province, where the attack took place, said there were casualties in the blast but he was not able to confirm whether officials were among them.

The police source, who declined to be identified, said the deputy head of Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security Intelligence agency, Abdullah Laghmani, had been killed by the bomb, at a funeral in the provincial capital Mehtar Lam.

Laghman governor Lutfullah Mashal was also wounded in the blast, the police source said.

A Reuters witness in the provincial capital saw a pick-up truck carrying wounded people covered in blood. ... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/02/AR2009090200340.html

2. It's our tragedy, we own it now.
What do we stand to gain by being in Afganistan? Is it worth the billions of dollars and the hundreds of lives we will spend there? What will constitute a win for us?

5. Bush is no longer the CIC
We can't continue to blame him for a continuance of war policies. We have freewill...we can stop the war. We don't have to go on and on. How many years do we have to go on killing people before we take responsibility? At what point does it become our war?

6. You miss my point.
The AWOL CHIMP and Cheney are in the peanut gallery with their corporate thugs, cheering on the "Present Occupant" for providing their Criminal Corporations with gigantic, unfettered, apparently never ending profits.

In a negative way.

3. Afghanistan, a big ol' hole in our economic bucket
We spanked the Taliban for those Saudi guys who flew planes into the towers killing 3,000. So now let's leave before we force the Tali's to learn to be even more organized and deadly. As for the oil deal they wouldn't agree to, to hell with it. I'd rather pay more at the pump instead of having our country look like a big scary-looking stupid bull who can't understand the more it fights the little red cape the weaker it gets.

We need to pull back on the world police act until we make things better here at home.

8. AP: Spy chief among 23 killed in Taliban suicide blast
Spy chief among 23 killed in Taliban suicide blast
By RAHIM FAIEZ, Associated Press Writer 51 mins ago

KABUL – A Taliban suicide bomber killed Afghanistan's deputy chief of intelligence during a visit to a mosque east of Kabul on Wednesday in an attack that left 22 others dead.

The bombing, which occurred in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, struck at the heart of Afghanistan's intelligence service and underscored the Taliban's increasing ability to carry off complex and targeted assaults.

The explosion ripped through a crowd in Laghman province just as Abdullah Laghmani, deputy chief of Afghanistan's National Directorate for Security, and other officials were leaving the main mosque in Mehterlam, 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of Kabul. Laghmani died at the scene, according to Sayed Ahmad Safi, the spokesman for the local governor.

A Taliban spokesman said a suicide bomber on foot targeted Laghmani, a key figure in Afghanistan's security services. President Hamid Karzai and the United Nations condemned the attack.

Laghmani was the former intelligence chief for Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold. In his most recent post, he directed intelligence operations, especially in eastern Afghanistan, and appointed local intelligence officials throughout the area.

He was an ethnic Pashtun, along with nearly all the Taliban, but fought with a Tajik-led faction during the war against the Taliban that preceded the U.S.-led invasion of 2001. ... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090902/ap_on_re_as/as_afghanistan

10. So was this guy an ally of Karzai or Abdullah?
He had fought with a Tajik group against the Taliban, even though he was an ethnic Pashtun.
