New York TimesCaroline Kennedy to Address Labor Convention
By Kate Phillips
Among the featured speakers at the A.F.L.-C.I.O.’s annual meeting in Pittsburgh in mid-September is none other than Caroline Kennedy, who may provide one of the more poignant moments just a few short weeks after her uncle’s death.
At the official wake for Senator Edward M. Kennedy last Friday at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum just outside Boston, Ms. Kennedy joked that her uncle would often rope her in to introduce him at various public events. This time she’ll be solo but no stranger to labor’s causes, since she has appeared at other union events over the years. Nor was her uncle or the Kennedy family set apart from union issues.
Eddie Vale, a spokesman for the labor organization, reminded us that both John and Robert Kennedy served on labor panels in the Senate before Ted Kennedy also assumed a seat reflecting his leanings. He was most recently the chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in the Senate, and he was an ardent champion of labor’s efforts.
In addition, while the public and the media seemed captivated by the very public emergence of Ted Kennedy Jr. as an incredibly eloquent spokesman at his father’s funeral — his remembrance has been, hands down, unofficially voted the one to revisit — Mr. Vale mentioned that the elder son had also spoken to labor groups recently. In fact, the younger Ted addressed the labor caucus at last year’s Democratic National Convention.
