White House Green Jobs Adviser Apologizes for Calling Republicans 'Assholes'
Source: Fox News

Van Jones, the Obama administration's "green jobs" adviser, apologized Wednesday for calling Republicans "assholes," saying the comments were made before he joined the administration and "were clearly inappropriate."

Jones had told a group of listeners earlier in the year that the reason Republicans are stonewalling the president is because they're "assholes," remarks that were recorded in a video and posted to YouTube.

"I apologize for the offensive words I chose to use during that speech," Jones said in a written statement to Politico. "They do not reflect the views of this administration, which has made every effort to work in a bipartisan fashion, and they do not reflect the experience I have had since I joined the administration."

He made the remarks in February during an energy lecture in Berkeley, Calif., after a woman in the audience asked him why President Obama and congressional Democrats were having trouble moving legislation -- even though Republicans, with a smaller majority, didn't have as much trouble earlier in the Bush administration.

"Well, the answer to that is, they're assholes," Jones said, to uproarious laughter. "That's a technical, political science term."

You should've apologized after Beck does for calling President Obama a racist. Besides, what you said Mr. Van Jones was the truth - they are assholes & worse.

46. Former Ohio Congressman Jim Traficant called his colleagues 'prostitutes' on the House floor.
It caused such an outrage that he was advised to deliver an apology. So, Traficant took the mike before the House and apologized---to prostitutes for associating them with congressmen.

13. It is never wrong to take the high road. He offered a real apology which you
don't see from the Republicans. "Sorry if you were offended by....." is not an apology.
I agree with you that they can go fuck themselves but as an official now in the administration
he has to keep from being marginalized by the Right. Now, after apologizing, he can put that behind him and get the
things that need to get done, done. Beck and his buddies would go on and on about this if he had not, so they are left with
nothing to bitch about. They probably still will, but everyone else will have moved on.
I also agree that if they don't like the election results, leave. That was the choice we were given in the 70's and after
King George was anointed in 2000. Not so funny now is it Pukes?

No one cares what Republicans have to say. For too long Democrats have cowered in the corner in fear of how the repubes will portray them. Guess what, If you identify yourself as a Democrat the right will call you things far worse than asshole.
Did Cheney apologize for telling Patrick Leahy to go fuck himself on the Senate floor?
Never apologize for saying anything about a Republican. It will be seen as a sign of weakness.
A major political party has been seized by the lunatic fringe. That's their problem, not ours.

of weakness. there is no one who doubts that he meant what he said. there are few who see a polite apology as a weakness. that has always been one of the big differences in the two parties. they say horrible, hateful things at the drop of a hat. we attempt to be civil and show some decorum. his sentiment was in no way altered. he just upped himself on the morally correct meter, imo.

6. What is wrong with us?
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 12:07 AM by targetpractice
Our population seems to have arrived at some weird tacit agreement that Republicans are the rightful authority figures of our society... Republican citizens are happy about that, of course Democrats are not.

Now that Democrats have won an election and are in possession of the car keys... We behave as if we are merely borrowing our parents car, and that we can only keep our car privileges as long as we don't rub our parents the wrong way...

Our fellow Republicans (in the back seat) keep whining that they are gonna tell Daddy about everything we do that they don't like. And we keep apologizing

And they have even convinced the MSM to portray them as such. They're the Daddy Knows Best stalwarts who have 'family values' (other than their boy toys and mistresses), that support the troops (but not with pay or health benefits or body armor) and are "pro-life" (other than fervently supporting the death penalty and screaming for war)

58. Doonesbury got it right several years ago.
Being considerate and polite mark you as a liberal. Conservatives scoff at such behavior. They acted all outraged if anyone called Bush a Nazi, but just chuckle while calling Obama a Nazi.

Remember when George W. claimed to be a "compassionate conservative?" He made the claim for the shock value, to say he was different from the other Republican candidates. And everybody said, "Is that even possible? Isn't that a contradiction in terms?" If any Democrat claimed to be a "compassionate liberal," they'd just draw a "So what?" reaction. Of course, George W. lied, but he got the publicity he wanted.

Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 10:12 AM by Better Today
Okay, my daughter moved back home a few months ago, not because she needs help, but because I need some help and she needed a big yard for a new puppy. So I've told her and told her, we are not "family" anymore we are housemates, STOP behaving like my daughter. It's a tough struggle kind of for both of us. Mainly the problem is similar to this one and the one you analogize. She keeps apologizing for stuff that gets brought up, I keep saying she doesn't need to apologize, I was just noticing or commenting on whateverand she was just responding, she doesn't need to change anything, or do anything, or apologize.

I hope both my daughter and the Democrats soon learn to TAKE their leads.

with Dick Cheney and see the language and posture he uses vs. that of the Dem's. No comparison. Cheney feels he is the one calling the shots for the direction of the country and can say any lie at any time and have the full support of the government and press to back him up on it. Dem's keep apologizing and back tracking.

In terms of the Health Care debate, NO CONSTITUENTS ARE ASKING FOR A BI-PARTISAN COMPROMISE, NONE NONE NONE. So dem's need to ask themselves what the hell they are doing trying to work on a bi-partisan compromise? Who are they working for?

141. Chenney is/was the ultimate authoritarian daddy figure...
His style is super assertive and unwavering... He lulls conservatives into submission.

I first noticed this authoritative style during the Florida 2000 recount... Bush, Cheney, Baker, and Hughes simply asserted from the get-go that they had won the election... Simple as that, tough cookies if you didn't like it. So, Gore and his supporters took to work trying to disprove that they had won... When in reality, the election simply wasn't over because votes were still being counted! So sad to watch... But, it was amazing to me to see how easily the population accepted it.

Interestingly, I think Bill Clinton also possesses this authoritative style and isn't afraid to call out Republican mis-behavior by name... Maybe that's why his approval numbers rose during whenever Republicans got on his case.

Obama has not exhibited this style yet... Obviously, since the media is actually entertaining a debate on whether schoolchildren should be able to stay home if he (the Chief Executive of our nation) broadcasts a speech to schools. He seems reluctant to call out opposition shenanigans.

So currently, I do see Nancy Pelosi exhibiting an effective leadership style, and getting things done... I don't see this in the Senate at all... Ummm... Who is the majority leader? Is is it still Harry Reid? ;)

157. That's a good example... I also noticed something recently...
A few times during the recent town hall meetings, I watched some of the angriest and most anxious Republican constituents simply beg their Republican Senator or Representative, "Please! Please! Tell us what to do?" Of course, reading between the lines... They were asking the designated authority figure to tell them how to think, how to understand the world, etc. They need to feel like everything is taken care of in the simplest of "Git'r Done" ways.

Just once I would love to see a Dem pull a Cheney and refuse to back down. Jones' response to pressure to apologize should have been "Sorry, I said what I believe and I stand by it." As it is he comes off looking like a wuss.

Seriously, if legislators are negotiating in bad faith, doesn't asshole describe their behavior, if not their demeanor?

It doesn't hurt him to take the high road now because that is some pretty harsh language, and if anybody brings it up he can say he apologized for it already. But, on the other hand, he said it, he knows it's true, we know it's true, hell pretty much everybody knows it's true, so let the crybabies have their apology for the use of "offensive words" it doesn't change the fact that they are assholes.

It's only half the puzzle. We all know republicans are asshole obstructionists of the highest order. That only explains why Democrats can't get things done.

I believe the question asked is why republicans COULD get things done. And the answer to that involves similar choice words and the democratic party establishment...

Funny, though. Does feel good to hear it. And that's whats important here.

85. No, that is not why they are assholes
They are assholes because they are not interested in representing the other half of the country that does not agree with them. They engage in ruthless obstructionism and conduct their political lives as if they were going to war every day against my half of the country. No matter how long and how completely democrats capitulate, act nice and in good faith, and give the benefit of the doubt, the republicans tirelessly take advantage at every turn.

At this point I blame the democrats for this as much as the republicans. Fool me once, shame on you... fool me for decades, thousands of times, lots of shame on me.

I am just as tired as anyone of Democrats' allowing Republicans to cripple and pwn them, whether Republicans are in the minority or in the majority.

AND I am also tired of using equating "balls" and penises with strength courage, guts, fearlessness, spine, backbone, etc. and pussy means cowardice, weakness, etc.

One thing has nothing to so with the other, except that people who can walk and chew gum at the same time can address both Democratic weakness and sexist metaphors.

And of course, they have him groveling before the GOP alter, even as Van himself is being slandered daily by Glen Beck. They should not have asked him to apologize for telling the truth. Or actually, for his opinion. They are assholes, and I wish the rest of that crowd has the spine to say it.
Van has my support to the end, and he has since 2003. He is an honest man who is passionate and engaged in his work, one of the few political people that puts principle above ego. I respect him as a political organizer and also as a human being.
On top of it all, he was making a joke. Forcing good people to apologize for a joke they told before they worked for you in order to sooth tea baggers is the act of a weak organization. It's a joke, son. It got a laugh, and had a mitigating after comment. A joke. And yet Beck says horrible things about Mr Jones with impunity, and with no shred of humor.
Too bad they make good men grovel and give rat bastards high praise in public.

115. Bush didn't apologize
He called a reporter an asshole near an open mike, talking to Cheney and no one in MSM called for him to apologize and everyone thought it was oh so cute.

It is too bad that Dems have to filter everything they say, or be made to apologize, and repugs, who obviously are incapable of stringing 2 words together without denigrating someone, never get called for it, unless it crosses some bottom of the barrel line (such as the godless pastor in Arizona)

125. Bush never apologized to Adam Clymer for calling him an asshole
The Republican presidential candidate George W Bush has said he regrets the fact that people heard him
make an insulting comment about a journalist, but he refused to apologise.

Just before a campaign speech in Illinois, Mr Bush said to his running mate Dick Cheney: "There's Adam Clymer,
major league asshole from the New York Times."

Mr Bush later said he did not realise that live microphones were going to pick up the remark, but he stopped
short of an actual apology.

A guy sitting at a bar, in mid-rant, says "All Republicans are assholes."

From the end of the bar, he hears, "Hey! You can't say that."

"Oh, are you a Republican?", the ranter asks.

"No, I'm an ASSHOLE!", he answers.

Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 11:27 AM by TygrBright
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media

I am here to apologize for saying "Republicans are assholes."

It was inappropriate to say "Republicans are assholes." I want to point out that I said "Republicans are assholes" before I became a member of President Obama's administration, and when I said "Republicans are assholes," it in no way reflected on any official views of President Obama's administration. Since President Obama and the administration have worked incredibly hard, with superhuman dedication, albeit limited success, to achieve any slight vestige of bipartisan cooperation from Republicans, my remark that "Republicans are assholes" could be construed as detrimental to those heroic efforts, and I am sorry for having said "Republicans are assholes."

A blanket statement that "Republicans are assholes" does not even accurately reflect my own experience. I have known Republicans who are not assholes, and I am sorry that my statement "Republicans are assholes" might reflect negatively on them. They do not deserve to be called assholes.

I will not advance any excuses for saying "Republicans are assholes." I will not qualify my apology for saying "Republicans are assholes," in any way. Indeed, I apologize unreservedly for saying "Republicans are assholes."

I am truly, sincerely, contrite for saying "Republicans are assholes," and I hope that those Republicans who know that, in fact, their legislative behavior has been cooperative, principled, statesmanlike, and restrained, can forgive me for saying "Republicans are assholes."

In short, and to recap, I am sorry for saying "Republicans are assholes."

No questions.

Thank you.

wickedly,
Bright

But the truth is, our enemy is also an asshole.

I am being sued by my neighbor. It has cost me a lot of time and concern. However, I like him. He likes me. And we keep things separate and in context. He's a good guy. He's also a staunch liberal. Like me. Now I do not call him an asshole. He isn't an asshole. My forester, who seems to be a conservative mindset, calls him all kinds of names. And I cringe. I like my suing neighbor more than my forester.

Normally, an enemy is just someone who is an opponent. Being an opponent isn't bad, necessarily. Being an asshole is something altogether different. And we are up against total assholes. Bush was the quintessential asshole. None higher. I wish the worst on him. Teddy Kennedy and Orin Hatch were enemies, but they got along.

Apologizing is wrong in this case. Grow a spine! Stop being a beaten housewife. Stop laying in the mud. We stand to totally lose the very thing this country was created for. A neutral place where everyone could get along.

We have Van Jones telling it like it is, and the M$M shifts the topic of discussion from the problems we facing (most of which the Republicans are a contributing factor) to some off hand comment made in a public address.

The M$M is focusing on verbal rhetoric rather than life and death problems like Global Warming and Health Care.
