US cuts aid to Honduras
By MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writer – 6 mins ago

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration on Thursday cut all non-humanitarian aid to Honduras over the ouster of President Manuel Zelaya, making permanent a temporary suspension of U.S. aid imposed after he was deposed in June.

The State Department made the announcement as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was meeting with Zelaya. Spokesman Ian Kelly did not say how much assistance would be cut but officials have said previously that more than $200 million is at stake. Kelly said it affected "a broad range of assistance to the government of Honduras."

"The secretary of state has made the decision, consistent with U.S. legislation, recognizing the need for strong measures in light of the continued resistance to the adoption of the San Jose Accord by the de facto regime and continuing failure to restore democratic, constitutional rule to Honduras," Kelly said in a statement.

"Restoration of the terminated assistance will be predicated upon a return to democratic, constitutional governance in Honduras," he said. In addition to the aid cut, Kelly said the department would revoke the U.S. visas of an unspecified number of Honduran officials who are backing Zelaya's successor, Roberto Micheletti.

11. What are you talking about?
Bozos? Seriously?

There were valid concerns that a coup wasn't declared a coup. It still hasn't been. The criticism by Clinton of Zelaya was also uncalled for.

14. The coup was declared illegitimate. Just because they didn't use yoru favored terminology
doesn't mean a damn thing. It was also telling that the right-wing was bitching about how Obama was helping the left proliferate in Latin America.

22. It's not just a terminological question.
Using the "right terminology" would require the US to suspend different types of aid and cooperation that the administration did not initially suspend. This was no mere terminological question.

8. It's, finally, a good start.
Now recall troops and ambassador, and freeze assets of coup participants.

10. Why do I get the feeling that back-door black ops are still being funded in Honduras?
Even this move was delayed and delayed until now - being too late for any kind of legitimate election to be held on schedule even if the coup government were to step aside for Zelaya's immediate return.

Direct over-the-counter aid might be cut off, but the goals of the US State Dept and Micheletti are one and the same. Disaster capitalism, suppress any and all moves to the left of the Latin Americas and Caribbean. This falls under the aegis of various black ops depts that we will hear nothing about in the corporomedia.

17. Wow! Isn't that something? Obama reminds me more and more of the son in
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 03:46 PM by Joe Chi Minh
Christ's parable about the father who had two sons.

The father asked one son to go and work in the vineyard and he refused. But then, "he repented and went". When asked the same question, the other son agreed to do so, but didn't. "Which of the two did the will of his father?" Christ asked?

He has everyone moaning and groaning at his wretched bipartisan attitude. But lo and behold. Weeks or months later, the necessary measure that everyone had despaired of, seems to have got done! It's as if he sees the Republicans as an endangered species and naturally very fearful and timorous, wee beasties, which he must observe and provide with a little provender and water without scaring them away. And then get on with the business of running the country. Everyone needs a hobby.

18. Zelaya pleased with US move to cut aid to Honduras
http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/284160,extra-zelaya-pleased-with-us-move-to-cut-aid-to-honduras.html

Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya on Thursday praised the US State Department decision to cut off aid to Honduras in the wake of the June 28 coup. After meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Zelaya said in Washington that the US move was "coherent" with views expressed by Latin American governments and shows the value "of unified positions."

He said that the government set up after the coup and led by former Congress Speaker Roberto Micheletti "is increasingly alone." Zelaya called on the current authorities in Honduras to change course.

"Let them rectify, let them realize that they are wrong, that the whole world is strongly calling their attention on the mistake that they have made," the exiled Honduran leader said.

"Let them stop affecting the Honduran people and making them suffer so much with repression."
