Air India aborts takeoff after fire, but none hurt

MUMBAI (AP) — An Air India plane heading from Mumbai to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, aborted its flight just before takeoff Friday morning after a passenger noticed that one of the engines was on fire, officials said. All the passengers were evacuated, and no one was injured.

The Boeing 747-400 was taxiing for takeoff when the fire was spotted, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. Fire engines extinguished the blaze, and the 229 people on board — 213 passengers and 16 crewmembers — were evacuated on emergency slides.

Er, how does the fact that one of the engines is on fire not show up on the huge cockpit control panel somewhere?
