Three guilty of airline bomb plot
Source: BBC News

Three men have been found guilty of plotting to blow up planes above the Atlantic with home-made liquid bombs.

A jury convicted ringleader Abdulla Ahmed Ali, 28, of conspiring to activate bombs disguised as drinks.

Tanvir Hussain, 28, and Assad Sarwar, 29, were also found guilty of the same charge at Woolwich Crown Court.

The verdicts follow one of the UK's longest terror inquiries. The men's arrests in 2006 led to airport restrictions on liquids.

1. So some terrorists were actually caught, tried and convicted BEFORE the crime?
Cheney would disapprove strongly! He says litigating is the effete wimpy Democratic policy that doesn't keep a country safe.

3. Plotting to commit a crime is still a crime in itself
Conspiracies to defraud, or murder or steel are crimes. At least unless you're a CEO or a bank.

4. Binary explosives do work and their method was able to breach
aircraft hull when tested. That being said these guys should hang because of the pain in the ass mini travel kit I have to carry.

There are several binary compounds that are stable until mixed and detonated. 20k fps detonation, product would destroy an aircraft.

pdf, the base compounds here are generally available to the public in most countries. Only the blasting cap would require a drivers license to purchase.

5. It doesn't matter whether or not their plan was workable
The fact that they had one is sufficient reason to convict them.

6. It is because of these asshats
that we are not allowed to bring harmless liquids on flights. I'd like to see them get long sentences of hard labor, but being as this is the UK, they'll probably get released to hero's welcomes in a few years.

7. I despise them almost as much as I do the Shoe Bomber
Everyone on US flights has to remove their shoes because of ONE MAN.

8. You mean old fashioned police work can find terrorists?
You don't have to send 150,000 troops to a middle eastern country where the plotters NEVER came from and bomb it into the stone age?

hmmm wow who'd a thunk it?

9. These are the arrests that Bush caused to be made early
almost meaning there wasn't enough evidence to convict:

US and UK intelligence officials believe the cell was directed by al-Qaida leaders in Pakistan. The final days of the plot, before the arrests were made, saw the US president at the time, George Bush, being briefed by Tony Blair on developments.

Washington pressed Britain to arrest the men earlier than police had planned, but Scotland Yard wanted to let the cell – which was under the tightest surveillance – continue so more evidence could be gathered to put before a jury.

The arrest in Pakistan, also at the urging of the US, of the plot's alleged mastermind, Birmingham-born Rashid Rauf, led UK police to bring their own arrests forward. Scotland Yard and MI5 feared if the UK cell learned of Rauf's arrest they would either try to escape or rush forward their attack, fearing imminent capture.
