The UN has called for a crackdown on Afghan poll fraud, amid mounting concerns about irregularities from last month's presidential election.

UN envoy Kai Eide says results from all ballot boxes in areas where there is any evidence of fraud must be annulled.

The Afghan electoral complaints' commission has ordered a number of audits and recounts.

The US ambassador to Afghanistan met President Hamid Karzai on Monday night to discuss his concerns. It is not known how Mr Karzai responded to the visit by Karl Eikenberry.

1. related: Afghan vote watchdog finds fraud, orders recounts
http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSTRE58725D20090908?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan's mainly U.N.-appointed election watchdog said on Tuesday it had found "clear and convincing evidence of fraud" in last month's presidential election and ordered a partial recount.

The Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) said in a statement returns must be recounted and audited for any polling station where more than 600 votes, representing 100 percent of "expected" turnout, were cast.

They must also be recounted in any polling station where a candidate received more than 95 percent of the votes if more than 100 valid ballots were cast, the ECC said.

"In the course of its investigations, the ECC has found clear and convincing evidence of fraud in a number of polling stations," the ECC statement said.

Most of the stations where it found fraud had either a larger than expected number of votes cast or a higher than expected proportion cast for a single candidate in the August 20 poll, the ECC said.

3. no duplicate - I almost posted that link
as an OP, but saw your post and just added it as a related Afghanistan voter fraud newstory.

Anyone with half a brain would know that Karzai getting 100% in opposition strongholds is flagrant fraud.

:hi:

6. update: Karzai Nears Win As Recount Ordered In Afghanistan
KABUL — A U.N.-backed commission Tuesday ordered a recount of tainted ballots from the Afghan presidential vote, saying it had "convincing evidence of fraud," even as President Hamid Karzai for the first time surpassed the threshold needed to avoid a run-off and win re-election.

Doubts are growing about the Aug. 20 election's credibility, a key step in U.S. and European efforts to strengthen the Afghan government and bolster declining support for the almost eight-year war against a spreading Taliban insurgency.
