Afghan insurgents kill 12 in ambush, including 4 U.S. Marines
By Jonathan S. Landay, McClatchy Newspapers Tue Sep 8, 10:44 am ET

GANGIGAL, Afghanistan — Four U.S. Marines died Tuesday when they walked into a well-laid ambush by insurgents in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province. Seven Afghan troops and an interpreter for the Marine commander also died in the ambush and the subsequent battle, which lasted some seven hours.

Three American service members and 14 Afghan security force members were wounded.

It was the largest number of American military trainers to die in a single incident since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion.

The battle took place around the remote hamlet of Gangigal, in a valley about six miles from the Pakistani border, after local elders invited the U.S. and Afghan forces for a meeting.

14. USA's problem (one of many) is trying to fight a land war from the air.
.
.
.

Despite trillions of dollars in weaponry and personnel -

The USA can't beat a wee defenseless country like Iraq.

How do they expect to beat Afghanistan . . .

OR

to tackle a well advanced and defended country like Iran?

MAYBE the USA should tackle it's problems at home like homelessness, poverty and health-care . . .

Just a silly Canuk idea . . .

19. "The invasion showed problems with the US government's "information apparatus,"

Now THERE'S an eye-opener.

Will the USA's CIC and Military Wizards ever mature?

It is a small wonder that the USA is considered the bully of the World.

(sigh)

18. The United States can overthrow a country without too much difficulty.
Occupying them seems to be a bit of different story.

9. Ambushed? Who would have thought...
that the Afghans would set up deadly ambushes for the Americans after only 8 centuries of practice? :sarcasm:

When I read what the US strategery is in Afghanistan - sending small units to hold specific ground - I realized that this really is Vietnam II. The mission of the Marines is always "live bait". It was for us in Vietnam and still is in Afghanistan.

We gotta get out of that place.

12. The NATIVES know the terrain. We have all the technology and the mighty weapons ...
but they have all the time in the world and it is their Native Land and Peoples. :(

This is NOTHING new. Even the highly trained, top notch troops within our Special Forces have been ambushed on occasion. Truth is that there are dangerous areas that you may be tasked to patrol. You can't be "ON" 24/7 when you're fighting an unconventional war.

16. The Vietnamese would have fought us for 100 years
because a century in their time is not so long as it is for us, SE Asia is a land of very ancient cultures, going back before the Neanderthals. And it has a high population density, which makes it even more difficult for a foreign army to occupy indefinitely. There is a reason it is not a part of China.

Afghanistan may be different in some respects, but for a foreign occupier, it might as well be another Vietnam situation.
