NY Times Reporter Kidnapped By Taliban Rescued
By Andrew Belonsky, 11:35 PM on Tue Sep 8 2009

It's a joyous night for the New York Times, for Afghan news agency, the subscription-only Pahjwok reports that foreign fighters have rescued Stephen Farrell, the paper's second reporter to have been kidnapped by the Taliban in recent months.

Farrell was taken earlier this month while covering a NATO air strike on Taliban forces in Kunduz, Afghanistan. His driver and translator were also taken.

Keeping with their policy, the Times kept a lid on the story, lest press coverage add more zeroes to a potential ransom. That's the same thing they did with David Rohde, who escaped his terrifying captors last June.

1 Brit commando dies in raid to free NYT reporter

By RAHIM FAIEZ (AP) – 22 minutes ago

KABUL — Western military officials in Afghanistan say a British commando was killed during a raid early Wednesday that freed a New York Times reporter from his Taliban captors.

Reporter Stephen Farrell was taken hostage along with his translator in the northern province of Kunduz on Saturday. German commanders had ordered an airstrike on two hijacked fuel tankers, and reporters traveled to the area to cover the story.

Two military officials told The Associated Press that one British commando died during the early morning raid. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the death had not been officially announced.

4. The tagline looks like reporter rescued reporter
Not trying to be funny, just saying that it looked odd. I'm glad the reporter was rescued. It's sad that a commando lost his life though.
