Supreme Court arguments under way in campaign case

By MARK SHERMAN and PETE YOST (AP) – 1 hour ago

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court wrestled on Wednesday with whether to allow corporations and labor unions to pay for political campaigns and end a century of legislative efforts to curb such spending.

In a case that began with a movie attacking Hillary Rodham Clinton, newly seated Justice Sonia Sotomayor jumped right into the questioning. She appeared skeptical about taking the far-reaching step of lifting the ban, a move urged on the court by a lawyer for a group that made the 90-minute movie that sought to undermine Clinton's presidential ambitions.

The focus of the case will be on whether two conservatives, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, are willing to overrule earlier decisions that had upheld the restrictions.

Both justices spoke at length in their Senate confirmation hearings about the importance of abiding by precedents — even if they would have voted the other way had they been involved in an earlier decision.

4. There was a guy arguing on Bill Moyers (reg. this case) that money=free speech.
The sad thing is that the guy used to be a civil rights lawyer

8. You know Moyers is usually pretty level headed and calm. I could tell he was losing it
with the guy's bullshit.

2. I wouldn't trust Roberts or the Don to stand by what they said in confirmation
hearings...

There is, after all, no honor among thieves.

3. We've been w/o Democracy for over 100 years.
They hid what they were doing, using corporations to take down Democracy and replace it (congratulations!) with Fascism. Who's the smartypants that said it couldn't happen here?

5. Scary. Have Roberts and Alito ever rendered a decison that went against corporate interests?
A primary reason that the Supreme Court appointed Bu*h to the presidency was to insure that the Supreme Court would remain under corporate control.

If this ban is overturned, radical protest on every street in every town would be in order, because the SCOTUS would be, for all intents and purposes, sounding the death knell of democracy in America.
