ICC prosecutor eyeing war crimes in Afghanistan

UNITED NATIONS — The prosecutor for the International Criminal Court says he is collecting information on possible war crimes by NATO forces and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Luis Moreno Ocampo says he also is conducting preliminary investigations on possible war crimes in Georgia, Colombia, Kenya and by Israeli forces in Gaza. The latter is in response to requests by the Palestinians and the Arab League.

Ocampo told a briefing Wednesday on the emerging international criminal justice system that he plans to open four new investigations in the next three years, but he wouldn't disclose any details.

The International Criminal Court is the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal and Afghanistan is one of the 110 countries that have ratified the treaty creating it.

1. About time. Long past time, in fact.
The treatment of civilians in Afghanistan is outrageous. And that includes all concerned in this 'war'...
