Pelosi: Afghan surge lacks support

The leader of the US House of Representatives has said that there is little support among Americans and politicians for sending more US troops to Afghanistan.

Nancy Pelosi, the speaker in the Democrat-controlled lower house of congress, made the comment on Thursday, as the administration of President Barack Obama considers whether to send more soldiers to fight the Taliban.

"I don't think there's a great deal of support for sending more troops to Afghanistan in the country or in the congress," Pelosi said.

Pelosi is the most senior Democrat to suggest that any move by the White House or Pentagon to send more troops to Afghanistan may face stern opposition in the legislature.

2. If we cannot afford single payer, then we cant afford these wars.
For me, that is the end of the argument from now on.

No goodies for me, then no goodies for the pentagon & big oil.

3. I know it lacks mine.
If we leave, people will die. If we stay, people will die. So no reason not to go.

If we leave, Afghanistan becomes the problem of Russia, China, India, Pakistan, and Iran. Maybe the EU, too. I would so much rather have THEM spending their money than us.

If we leave, the President's dick is perceived as small. So far, no US president has been able to deal with that.

So we'll undoubtedly stay. Thanks, George, I know who to blame.

5. Sarah Palin, Karl Rove, Bill Kristol and others recently sent Obama a letter
supporting the Afghan surge.

I think it's good for Pelosi to communicate to Obama an alternative view. Not just her, others such as Levin, Feingold and Jack Reed have said made similar statements.

Pelosi Sees Support Ebbing for Afghan War
Congress's Reluctance to Increase Troops May Pit Majority Against White House

By YOCHI J. DREAZEN and NAFTALI BENDAVID

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she sees little congressional support for boosting troop levels in Afghanistan, putting the Democratic majority in Congress on a possible collision course with the Obama administration over the future conduct of the war there.

The remarks Thursday by Ms. Pelosi (D., Calif.) make her the highest-ranking Democrat to signal opposition to the administration's handling of the Afghan war, a top national-security priority.

The remarks also underscored the increasingly complex political dynamics confronting President Barack Obama as he considers whether to send additional U.S. forces to Afghanistan.

<snip>

The comments appeared designed to throw down an early marker in the political debate over Afghanistan, sending the White House a signal that it can't take Democratic support for granted.

10. Good.
Pelosi is well on the road to redemption in my eyes. Her hard stance on the public option and now rumblings about the futility of Afhganistan. I'll take Democratic leadership wherever I can get it.

12. here is Rudyard Kipling's famous quote about military invasions of Afghanistan -
"When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains, and the women come out to cut up what remains, jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains and go to your gawd like a soldier."

the British learned better, the Soviets learned better, and now it's the turn of the Americans and the
CIC Mr. Obama
