Navy woman awarded Military Cross
Source: BBC

A female medic from Devon who saved the life of a soldier while under attack has become the first woman in the Royal Navy to be awarded the Military Cross.

Able Seaman Kate Nesbitt, from Plymouth, braved Taliban fire to tend to a soldier shot in the neck during a gun battle in Afghanistan.

The 21-year-old, who will receive the medal at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace later this year, is only the second woman in the Armed Forces to receive the Military Cross.

5. Medics & Corpsmen...
gotta be the bravest people in the military. They risk their asses, not to kill, but to save.

One of the Corpsmen in my Marine outfit had 4 Hearts!

6. A good drinking strategy in the Navy was to hang with a Hospital Corpsman if marines were about.
They would stack drinks on them, and his buddies could take advantage of the pre-brawl drinking binge.
Ahh.. Drunken sailorness.

10. Good for her! I'm trying to figure out the US equivalency and it
looks like it's on a level with a Silver Star. Here's what I found out, mostly from wiki.

"The Military Cross (MC) is the third level military decoration."

"The MC is granted in recognition of "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land to all members, of any rank …". In 1979 the Queen approved a proposal that a number of awards including the Military Cross could in future be awarded posthumously."

"The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States not justifying a Service Cross—the Army Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, or the Air Force Cross. It may be awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Armed Forces, distinguishes himself or herself by extraordinary heroism involving one of the following actions:

- In action against an enemy of the United States
- While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force
- While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UK - First is the Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest military decoration which is, or has been, awarded for valour "in the face of the enemy" to members of the armed forces of various Commonwealth countries, and previous British Empire territories. It takes precedence over all other orders, decorations and medals.

US equivalent Medal of Honor for "conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UK - Second is the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross, awarded "in recognition of an act or acts of conspicuous gallantry during active operations against the enemy".

US Equivalent is the US Distinguished Service Cross, "awarded for extreme gallantry and risk of life in actual combat with an armed enemy force."

11. Do they not have a separation of church and state like we do here?

12. No, but where does 'church' come into this?
It's well known that Britain doesn't have separation of church and state; the Queen is the head of the Church of England, Church of England bishops have automatic seats in the House of Lords, the Church of Scotland is the national church in that country (though the state does not control it), and state schools in England and Wales must hold a collective act of worship each day that is "wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character".

But why do you breing up church or religion in this thread?

14. Ah - in that case, they'll have a problem with the US Distinguished Service Cross/Navy Cross/
Air Force Cross, I guess.
