Ad Boycott Costs Glenn Beck Over 50% of Ad Dollars

62 Companies Refusing to Advertise with Beck Cost Fox

Nearly $600k Per Week

OAKLAND, Calif. — The advertising boycott of Glenn Beck has cost the controversial host over half of his estimated advertising revenue since it was launched by ColorOfChange.org a month ago. This according to data analyzed from industry sources.

Estimated advertising revenue was collected on a week-by-week basis for a period of two months. According to the data collected, the amount of money spent by national advertisers on Beck’s program per week was at its highest at approximately $1,060,000, for the week ending August 2, 2009. ColorOfChange.org launched their campaign at the end of that week and since then, 62 advertisers have distanced themselves from Beck. Data collected for the week ending September 6, 2009 shows Beck’s estimated ad revenue at $492,000, equal to a loss of $568,000.

“Fox News Channel has consistently claimed they haven’t lost revenue as advertisers abandon Glenn Beck, but the numbers prove otherwise,” said James Rucker, Executive Director of ColorOfChange.org. “Fox News Channel has a limited amount of ad positions. If 62 companies refuse to run ads on two of their 24 hours of programming, they are losing inventory. No matter how high Beck’s ratings have been lately, advertisers still see Beck as toxic and don't want him associated with their brands. There is no way that Fox News Channel is making the money they should be making with Glenn Beck.”

ColorOfChange.org launched its campaign against Beck last month after the Fox News Channel host called President Obama a “racist” who “has a deep-seated hatred for white people” during an appearance on Fox & Friends, remarks that they say indicates a pattern of race-baiting and fear-mongering on Beck's part. ColorOfChange.org called on its members to sign a petition urging companies who advertise on Glenn Beck to cut off their advertising support of his work. To date, over 180,000 people have signed the petition and 62 companies have pledged to not run any additional advertisements during Glenn Beck’s show.

2. I understood that a lot of that money stayed with Faux but just wasn't used for his show.
Some of the contracts allow Faux to use the money where they wish.

8. Here's something about it

A Fox rep noted that Geico is dropping its ads from the show but was quick to note that it was shifting dollars to other programs. "The advertisers referenced have all moved their spots from Beck to other programs on the network, so there has been no revenue lost," the rep said.

10. Sounds like BS to me. There are only so many minutes in an hour that
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 06:59 PM by lob1
they can advertise. Those minutes are always filled. They can't just shift all of Beck's minutes around without knocking out an advertiser already in those spots. Fox doesn't want to admit it's being hurt.

Sorry, I meant to post this as a response to #8.

20. That's what I was thinking
There's a finite amount of space for those ads to be placed, they must be suffering a loss from this. However, BecKKK is clearly spouting seccessionist shit that suits Murdoch's agenda and I worry that he'd prop BecKKK up with his own money, if he had to.

Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 07:11 PM by bloomington-lib
Edit: Just read this
Beck’s top three advertisers were Beachbody (creator of P90X Exercise Equipment), Egg Genie and Telebrands (creator of Jupiter Jack).”

Maybe there's a company left that I can actually boycott.

16. What's hilarious is that Fox's main audience is over retirement age. Which means they are dying.
MSNBC's Audience is mainly right in the sweet spot of desired demographic ages for advertisers.

Their audience is educated and are making the most money they will in their lives.

Did I mention that Fox News' audience is dying and have little disposable income?

Where did you read that? I am past retirement age and never watch Fox. And I don't plan on dying anytime soon.

24. I was mostly just needling an obvious troll.
But ratings breakdown do show that MSNBC does have a much younger viewership.

The "dying" comment was pure needling.

I'm sure you'll be here for a long time.

28. That's True but still Beck, O' Reilly & Hannity
do about twice+ what KO or Rachel do in the 25-54 Demo. But I think too it does handicap MSNBC somewhat that Comcast hides them off in the upper tier while CNN, HLN & Faux are in the lower tier and back-to-back.

Mediabistro/TVNewser is a great place to check the daily ratings.

23. What is missing from the article...
...is who are the companies that have filled the holes created by those companies that have stopped advertising during his program? As one leaves, another is brought into the fold.

I don't see this type of thing working to get him off the air, but not to worry...give him plenty of rope...he'll do the work himself and get is ignorant, crying ass self fired, eventually. The sooner the better.

I'm assuming you're sharing this news because he must have announced an end date for his show since he lost advertisers?

26. Glenn Beck's $23 million a year
In Friday's Washington Post, it was stated that Glenn Beck is making $23 million a year. Does anyone have an opinion on how much he will be making, say, one year from now? More money, or less money, or the same amount of money? And, why do you hold whatever opinion you may have on this -- what are your reasons for the prediction? Just curious.

Their boy Glenn is doing a fine job at getting people to shout in holy terror of Good Government.
