Glenn Beck Michigan appearance draws Democratic protests

LANSING - A liberal group says the Michigan Chamber of Commerce is glorifying hate by having Fox News commentator Glenn Beck speak at its annual meeting.

Progress Michigan issued a statement Monday saying the visit "brings shame" to the state.

Michigan State University College Democrats and other groups say they'll protest at the East Lansing event Tuesday night.

Chamber President Rich Studley says his group has a tradition of inviting speakers from across the political and ideological spectrum.

Why not find out which businesses are registered members of the organization and give them some free publicity, let the public know which businesses support racist ideology and ask the question, do you support neanderthal racist-backing businesses? I doubt any business in these tough economic times would be willing to lose a large customer base over some blow-hard and may withdraw their membership in the chamber of commerce.

EAST LANSING - Frenetic radio and television talker Glenn Beck brought his "mad as hell and not going to take it anymore" show to a Michigan State University conference center today.

He told 500 Michigan business leaders that pretty much everyone in both parties in the nation's capital is corrupt and that the end is near if we don't do something about it.

Beck's appearance at the Michigan Chamber of Commerce Future Forum prompted protests from MSU College Democrats, liberal activists, and a boycott by most of the Democrats who were supposed to be part of the daylong program because of what they considered his over-the-top criticism of the administration of President Barack Obama.

But Beck said he doesn't have much use for Democrats or Republicans.

Which is alarming at 2 levels. The Detroit Free Press is supposed to be to the left of the uber-conservative Detroit News. And Dawson Bell is supposed to be a straight news reporter.

Bell covers Lansing and politics for the Detroit Free Press, and he is the only reporter on the list. Finding bias in a straight news story is difficult, but bias there can cause the most damage because it is not so obvious. Bell helped start the "ipod for every student in Michigan" controversary last spring when he mistakenly wrote in a story that House Democrats were proposing a $58 million line item to buy every student an ipod that was really for new technology. Republicans made hay with that line, and it continues today...

...While I appreciate his (DBell's) timely response, I think it's safe to say that 1) he failed to answer my questions ("all the specifics we have" doesn't answer where he got the $38 million figure in the first place, nor why he changed it to $36 million the next day) and 2) he completely ignored the larger point I was making about the factual inaccuracies and stating assumptions as fact that he made. Also note that once again, he closes by stressing the fact that the "iPod deal" (which never existed) is now "dead" thanks to his making it up in the first place...
