House votes to rebuke Rep. Wilson
‘You lie’ outburst draws action; vote is 240-179

WASHINGTON - Bitterly divided over an accusatory outburst — "You lie" — lawmakers voted Tuesday to admonish one of their own for his jarring interruption of President Barack Obama.

The resolution of disapproval against Republican Rep. Joe Wilson added to the already-toxic atmosphere of partisanship in the House. Democrats said Wilson's behavior during Obama's speech to Congress last week was an egregious display of disrespect that could not be ignored. Republicans accused the majority party of hypocrisy and wasting the taxpayers' time.

"At issue," declared House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, "is whether we are able to proceed with a degree of civility and decorum that our rules and our democracy contemplate and require."

Wilson, speaking after Democrat Hoyer, refused to back down. "I think it is clear to the American people that there are far more important issues facing this nation than what we're addressing right now." He said Obama had "graciously accepted my apology and the issue is over."

19. It wasn't a CENSURE
It was a resolution of “disapproval”, you should go read it for yourself . There are different levels, the least being what they did, all the way up to a censure, which is just one level below expulsion, which they did not do.

12. About time. We are a nation of rules and laws.
And now every Repugnant (especially Boner) who voted NO should be asked at every open press conference:

"Congressman, why is it that you support the embarrassing outburst of the Wilson child?"

For their NO vote is implicit support of childish behavior and they should be called on it constantly.

By the way, what is now to prevent multiple members of the crowd from screaming "You LIE" any time Boner and his buddies hold a press conference?

For the first time a President has been heckled .... do we really just sit back and do nothing? I'm afraid if the House did nothing, Wilson's heckling would just be the beginning of the bad behavior.

35. Massa's reply:
"My vote against formally reprimanding Rep. Wilson is based on my belief that we should be doing more important things now that Congress is back in session," said Congressman Eric Massa. "I strongly disapproved of Joe Wilson's outburst last week, but I think it's more important for us to be working on solutions rather than voicing more objections to something that happened almost a full week ago. The issues facing the American people are more important than myself, Rep. Wilson, or President Obama and I think we owe it to the public to continue working for them right now."

of C-in-C is reserved for particular circumstances.

The President has historically played a key role in the national psyche of the American people, not unlike that of the flag. In the UK, a PM is fair game; but even so, overtly calling him/her a liar would just show a pitiful ignorance of the most elementary protocol.

Some of our MPs were apparently guilty of criminal theft over their expenses, but I don't believe any British journalist - and frankly they tend to be animals (think of that poor Olympic runner and Susan Boyle) would have expressly used the term "thief". The dignity of public office has to be considered - even if it wasn't by the thieves. It is arguable that Wilson's outburst would have had the effect of a subliminal incitement to anarchy - and there are evidently numerous, at least borderline-psychotic, Republican voters out there, begging for such a "leader".

45. Where does NBC get off saying it adds to an atmosphere of
bitter partisanship? Wilson broke the rules. There's nothing partisan about this resolution. If anybody was partisan, it was the GOP for allowing Wilson to skate over something they wouldn't have accepted from a Dem to a GOP president for a second. The GOP even insisted in condemning MoveOn.org, but won't condemn a member of their own party who did much worse?

50. I watched this for a while today and saw the republicans completely ignore the issue of the
resolution and use the time to lie about health care reform
instead.

The issue at stake for this resolution was to uphold decorum
and civility in our nations, the peoples house.

Schools children watch this and when they see our
representatives shouting out in bad taste, what is to stop
them from doing it as well?
These republicans refused to comprehend this detail. They are
rude and ignorant and want to promote rudeness and ignorance I
guess.
