Roadside Attack Continues Deadliest Year for U.S. and NATO Troops

(AP) A spokesman for U.S. and NATO forces says three American service members died when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan.

Col. Wayne Shanks says the deaths occurred Tuesday. He did not release any other details when he spoke Wednesday.

Violence has risen across Afghanistan in the last three years as the resurgent Taliban have regained control of large swaths of countryside.

Fighting has been particularly harsh this summer in the south, where thousands of U.S. troops have been deployed to bolster the Canadian and British-led operations in the Taliban heartland.

2. This ongoing slaughter is adding up.
I said it to a colleague in 2003 "This inexorable, steady 1 to 3 killed per day or week is going to add up pretty quickly". Now we don't even hear about the total number of dead Soldiers in Iraq or Afganistan. Only the inexorable Tick of individual human souls being sold out.

4. My heart sinks every time I read a story like this.
My granddaughter has recently been deployed to Afghanistan. Probably as one of those "enabler" troops another poster so crudely wrote about tonight!:grr:

5. We need to get the hell out of there pronto!
This country is war weary. The Generals are asking for more troops. Obama has to make a definitive decision regarding this continued, miserable waste of American lives
and funds. At another time it may have worked, but that time has passed and nothing good will come of our continued presence there.

6. Much of the problem
stems fromthe fact that this is where the wars initiated and has been under-resourced since 2001-2002. Major effort was in Iraq. Now Iraq is fading and Gates wants 30k more troops into Afghanistan. Hard place to win friends and influence enemies to give up. Following the Soviet model pretty soon....
