Rasmussen cites shared interest day after U.S. drops plans for Europe shield

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has urged the Western alliance and Russia to consider linking their defensive missile systems.

He says NATO and Russia have a shared interest in combatting the proliferation of intercontinental ballistic missile technology in other countries.

In his speech Friday, Fogh Rasmussen says, "If North Korea stays nuclear and if Iran becomes nuclear, some of their neighbors might feel compelled to follow their example."

4. Conservative pundits act as though Russia was the real threat...
The Bush administration cited the threat of a nuclear Iran as the reason for placing a missle defense shield in central Europe. Yet, now that Obama has said he won't go through with the system, conservative pundits like Hannity and Hugh Hewitt are saying that the hardliners in Moscow are the ones to gain. I thought Iran was the actual threat. Was the purpose of the missle system to thwart Russian hardliners (it would have had the opposite effect)? Did NATO or the US see Russia as a threat to central Europe? Or is this just another stupid game played by neo-conservatives in the Bush administration? I don't know. But honestly, does anyone think Iran posed a clear and present danger to central Europe? Glad the neo-cons aren't making our foreign policy now.

6. I advocated integration of Russia into NATO years ago
right after the collapse of the Soviet Union. I knew that Russia would see expansion of NATO into former Soviet satellites would foment distrust and paranoia, so I favored gradual integration of Russia into a grand alliance of nations that stretched completely around the world in strategic defense. My words fell on deaf ears, apparently taking until the neocons have been temporarily stymied for such a possibility.
