Robert Maday, the career criminal believed to be armed and on the loose in the Northwest suburbs, may have hijacked a grey
Volkswagen Jetta in Hoffman Estates around 6:45 a.m. today.

Police say a man suspected of carjacking a vehicle in Hoffman Estates fits the description of escapee Robert Maday. Suburban authorities have launched a manhunt,
and he's considered armed and dangerous.

The victim was coming to work south of Interstate 90 when a man approached her, brandished a gun and ordered her out of the car, Russo told Fox.

Schools in Hoffman Estates and neighboring Schaumburg were on lockdown Friday morning, according to information on the district Web sites.

Maday, 39, overpowered two law officers, taking their weapons as he was being driven from Kankakee to a court hearing at the Rolling Meadows branch of the Cook County
Criminal Courts Thursday.

He swapped his orange jail uniform with the pants and shoes from one investigator, handcuffed the two men in their car, then fled into the Meijer Store in Rolling Meadows.

Maday was shackled at the wrists and ankles, yet took a gun and pants belonging to one of the investigators, drove off in
their vehicle and abandoned it in Mt. Prospect, authorities said. He then allegedly commandeered an SUV and abandoned
it in Arlington Heights.
