U.S. conservative Christians target 16 Democrats
Source: Yahoo/Reuters

By Ed Stoddard Ed Stoddard – Sat Sep 19, 6:36 pm ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Conservative Christians, a key base for the Republican Party, said on Saturday they were targeting 16 Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, in the 2010 congressional elections.

Four other Democratic senators and 11 U.S. representatives were on the list, which was released at a summit in Washington of conservative "values voters" who are rallying against President Barack Obama's agenda.

....
Former Arkansas Governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee won a straw poll that asked delegates to choose the Republican they would most like to see take on Obama in 2012. Huckabee took 28.5 percent versus 12.4 percent for the runner-up, Romney.

Article does not name the entire list.
I think we have a fight brewing with these so-self-proclaimed conservative Christians.
(My first attempt at this new DU LBN posting. It's good.)

1. As if they have NOT been targeting them all along.
The Religious right fought mightily for the Republicons in the last 2 election cycles. It's not as if these idiots would ever consider supporting a Democratic politicians, at least not since Carter.

in order to instruct others on how to live their lives.

Narrow, unenlightened halfwits.

12. The organized religious Right didn't support Carter.
They supported Reagan. Carter is a *real* Christian, which is anathema to the religious Right.

I can't go with their flow. I won't swim with the reich wing do gooders and their false prophets in their seething judgmental cesspool of hypocrisy.(sugar coated, self serving, shit creek)

If there really is a God, I'd hope that it would not approve of torture and mass murder as a means to get rich, or to win political power.

36. YES! If they state they are engaging directly in politics....TAX 'EM!
Edited on Sun Sep-20-09 11:21 AM by AlbertCat
But of course they'll put on the ol' "We're being persecuted" robes. These guys just love playing martyr. The poor put upon Christians!

Someone must figure out a way to do it without making the Dems look anti-Christian. I know.... their taxes can go to paying for Health Care Reform. (Actually, that wouldn't work either)

There's no way to do it.

Maybe if they start by taxing their businesses.

10. Any religious institution found taking part in organized political actions should
(beyond registration drives) should immediately lose their tax exempt status.

Beyond this, how do we counter? Target repubs? There has to be better way.

21. That's a slippery slope
I run a peace and justice outfit in Tacoma, Washington via a church..we work with the GLBT community on gay rights issues, the peace community on anti war issues, the labor community on fair wage issues and the health care community on a single payer drive..we view these issues as a moral issue being rooted in our interpretation of the Gospel and as such have vigils, forums, classes etc etc..I am sure that by your definition at certain times we've probably crossed the line!

31. Much of politics has it's roots in moral issues. The problem is, morality is relative and my taxes
support your efforts as well as the opposing efforts. The money is not distributed equitably. Not to mention my interpretation of the gospel may be in direct opposition to yours and others. It becomes a situation where government (and corpo lobbies) are favoring one belief system (the one that they can best manipulate to their advantage) over another.

Also, when big corpo gets behind people like the teabaggs and other hate groups that hide behind the religious cloak it becomes a grand deception. Morality is the first casualty. It becomes a 'simple' case of economics. Who has the most dollars. And that's the way 'they' want it because 'they' have the connections and the dollars.

18. This is the not the time they should be playing politics...
They should be looking forward and trying to be bi-partisan. Don't they know it will all come back to haunt them if they play politics at this stage. It is not the time for the blame game.

(Just a list of the greatest hits of excuses they use on us whenever we gather to fight back).

20. I hope the right wing fundies spend every nickel they have in this effort
After the expend all of their cash, after they borrow heavily even more, after they put their whole being into defeating good Democrats, I hope they watch in dismay as all 16 stand re-election and come shining through like the sun after a storm.

I'm good with Harry staying in the Senate, as long as we get a more aggressive Majority Leader to take his place.

35. OK Democratic Mormons (I know there are a few of them out there...)
You need to work to get the Mormons back into the Democratic party

A simple view through history should get the blood boiling

Many Republican Lawmakers back in the time of Briagham Young wanted to flat out EXECUTE you guys

Remind Mormon Republicans of that

Start up the "Harry Reid Democrats" campaign

37. Well - Harry Reid is on his own - he doesn't work for ME so he can count me out this time around!!!
I'm stopping feeding the MONSTER!!!

maybe when he's DEFEATED, then he'll wonder why he didn't acutually try to govern like a DEMOCRAT instead of caving into the repukes time and again...

unfortunately, we'll probably have a repuke - unless a GOOD REAL Democrat challenges him next time around!!!

and he'll have ONLY HIMSELF to blame!!!

I will never vote for a repuke - I will just NOT VOTE for him if he's the choice come next time around!!!

We just need to have a solid challenger to fight the Repuke they'll put up against that person.

Reid needs to go. If they want to legally help with that part, lets let 'em do it.
