At least three people have been killed after an earthquake hit Bhutan and neighbouring Himalayan regions.

The tremors also caused panic in the city of Guwahati, the capital of India's north-eastern state of Assam.

sad.

al jazeera reports at least 7 dead people for now.

'Ugyen Tenzing, the country's director of disaster management, said rescuers were searching for survivors under the debris of collapsed buildings in the eastern districts of Munggar and Trashigang.

"We now have five confirmed deaths from house collapses in Munggar and two people were killed when a two-storey building collapsed in the neighbouring district of Trashigang," Tenzing said.

"It's hard to determine the extent of the damage at the moment. There is still information coming in."'

1. They are in unreinforced masonry and stone buildings=a lot of deaths in earthquakes
When we had the 89 quake her around 50 people died--mostly from the collapsing freeway and stuff falling from old masonry buildings. There was one the same magnitude in the ME 6 months later and it killed 10,000.
