GM Investing $21 Million in Flint Assembly Plant

Source: Associated Press

General Motors Co. says it plans to invest more than $21 million in its Flint Assembly plant to build the 2011 Chevrolet light-duty crew cab truck.

Detroit-based GM said in a statement Monday the renovations and new machinery will make the plant more flexible and allow heavy- and light-duty trucks to be built on the same line.

GM Flint Assembly is the company's sole producer of GM's heavy-duty crew cab trucks, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. Flint Assembly also makes the heavy-duty regular cab Silverado GMC Sierra.

Construction at Flint Assembly is set to start in the fourth quarter, and production is to begin in July. The plant now employs 1,767 hourly and salaried workers on two shifts.

3. I bet they won't let Michael Moore....
.... anywhere near the opening ceremony.

But I'm sure he's applauding this, too.

4. Are they planning on hiring more?
I know that the $21 M will go to construction of the lines and help put some money back into Flint, but I hope they will also have to hire more workers and take back some of the workers that have been laid off.

14. The Volt is crap!
If the Volt is so great, why are the American people not buying them? Answer that, Mr. Smarty.

9. $21 million isn't much these days.
Especially for an auto plant. At the old Ford Assembly Plant in Wixom, a team of three companies plans to spend $725 million to redevelop the plant, as their initial investment.

Okay, they mean to take a plant not currently active and transform it into a battery and solar cell factory. Pretty big changes. I'm just saying $21M is 1/34th as much. So while it is good news for Flint, it's only 1/34th as good as the news for Wixom.

10. I should think modifying existing
equipment would be much less expensive than starting completely over.

11. Great news!
Michigan has taken a beating but Flint has been getting it severely for longer than the rest of the state. I hope this means GM will be re-investing long term on this. Bravo!

12. For the workers at GM

Marta and I bought our first NEW car since 1979 (Chevy Equinox) for her on Memorial Day. I got a new Chevy Cobalt (clunker was a 91 Caprice) for Labor Day weekend.

K&R!
