CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., has been admitted to the hospital following a morning fall at his home in suburban Washington, D.C.

He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days, his office reported Monday afternoon.

Byrd was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He fell after standing up too quickly, his staff said.

"While having no broken bones or bruises, upon examination, doctors found an elevated white-blood cell count, which can be an early sign of an infection," spokesman Jesse Jacobs said in a prepared statement. "Therefore, his doctors have determined that Byrd should remain in the hospital for antibiotic treatment and observation.

2. Thank God he didn't break any bones! At 91, anyone is very
vulnerable to that!

3. Poor old guy! I'm glad nothing's broken,
but any trip to the hospital at his age means they may find something else...perhaps the reason for the fall. I hate to hear this...

12. No kidding.
When I was visiting a seriously ill relative I was appalled at how many rooms in the same wing with a MRSA warning on the door. Not that surprising when it crossed the threshold to his room too.

7. I have nothing by the admost admiration for Senator Byrd, but
I believe the man's time has passed. I really feel he should step aside and allow younger stronger men to fight the good fight. I do wish him well.

13. I don't love Byrd.
I know he's changed, but he wrote in 1944 one of the most disgusting things ever heard in this country...

"I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."
