Paul Kirk Tapped For Kennedy Senate Seat
Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 03:07 PM by LTR
Source: Huffington Post

Fox News' Major Garrett reports that Paul Kirk has been chosen to fill the Massachusetts Senate seat held previously by Ted Kennedy.

The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza said on MSNBC Wednesday afternoon that an announcement could come later in the day.

Kirk was chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1985 to 1989 and a longtime aide to the late Sen. Kennedy. He currently co-chairs the Commission on Presidential Debates, is the chairman of the board of directors of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, and is a member of the board of directors of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.

3. The Kennedys wanted him. I'm sorry Dukakis did not get it.
So it seems that Kirk will be a careatker Senator. I expect one of the Kennedys to step forward and the GOP will ask Jane Swift to run for the seat. She was all over the place in MA campaigning for McCain in last year's Presidential election.

5. White House thought Dukakis was too independent for its taste
Dukakis would have been an awesome advocate of universal health care.

6. he also would have been a wonderful advocate for
21st-century rapid transit and environmental issues.
Plus he's a good guy.
I'm very sorry he wasn't appointed.

7. I voted for Dukakis in 1988 in the Indiana primary and Presidential elections
To this day, I am still sore at CNN's Bernie Shaw for the question about Kitty Dukakis being raped and murdered. Poppy Bush was never asked a similar question.

Then there was the Willie Horton smear...

10. It was an easy question & Dukakis screwed himself with his answer.

He came off as a stereotypical bleeding-heart wimp and he has no-one to blame but himself for it. We do ourselves no favor by complaining about the media in those instances where we could profit from self-criticism. And self-criticism is in the best traditions of the left.

20. No. By showing no passion & summoning no emotion or outrage.
I'm inclined to oppose the death penalty in any case.

17. The other moderators that evening weren't very pleased with Shaw for
asking it. I saw one of the other moderators on a show several years after this debate and she said that she and the other moderators strongly urged Shaw not to ask that question - they felt it was going to completely destroy the debate and overshadow everything else that was discussed that evening - which it did. Shaw's question was fair game for an interview, but a debate, IMO, is too important an opportunity to discuss really substantive issues that affect the country - and how the candidates would approach those issues - to be hijacked by such manipulatively provocative hand grenades.

21. It was a crappy question (on a crappy issue, to boot), & one that played to demagogy.

At the same time, you predictably have to face that sort of thing in a political campaign and it doesn't pay to complain about it.

23. wonderful post - RECOMMENDED for all to read that care about what got in office instead of the
honorable governor of Mass.

Shaw, you know, HAS to feel utter shame for doing this, even if he never would say such...

12. Do you LIVE in Massachusetts? or?
are you living in some other state where this seems to make a difference?

I live here, and 50 guys and gals can fill the spot for 3-4 months.

Now, when do you tell us that that other thread has any realistic material to report?

Something of substance? No! I thought not.

15. The Kennedys requested Kirk, but as of tonight, nothing has been announced officially.
I imagine Patrick will honor the wishes of the family, though. The debt Massachusetts owes Ted Kennedy is immeasurable. Even the smarmy Conservative pundit recognized that. Sadly, the rank and file don't realize how many of their jobs they owe to him.

Ironically, I heard a woman who drives a shuttle between a health center that probably would not exist but for Kennedy's bill and the hospital say he was too "lib-ur-ul."

13. All the Governor has to do is write a letter declaring an emergency. Dumbass requiremment, but
there it is.

No provision for in the 17th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, either, but there it is.
