Castro praises Obama on climate

By Michael Voss
BBC News, Havana

The former Cuban President Fidel Castro has praised US President Barack Obama's speech before the UN General Assembly for its words on climate change.

Mr Castro described President Obama's admission that the US had been too slow to act on climate change as a brave gesture.

But he added that the American capitalist system was incompatible with a clean planet.

Mr Castro has long been a fierce critic of US presidents.

In his latest editorial, published in all the state media, Mr Castro quoted widely from Mr Obama's address to the UN.

'Aggressive foreign policy'

He praised the American president for saying that the US had been slow to act on climate change and that richer countries had to take the lead since they had caused much of the damage.

No other US president, he said, would have had the courage to make such remarks.

1. He's right - the American capitalist system is incompatible with a clean planet...
...unless the gov't puts tough regulations in place.

When the bottom line is what counts and business people only look one fiscal quarter into the future, you don't get a clean planet.

2. Fidel Castro and President Obama should meet. . .
. . .now that takes some courage. That would be some historic moment!

Castro knows he's short on time to meet with the best chance we've seen to bring our nations together in harmony after a too-long estrangement. . .

I bet these two men would have a conversacion simpatica. . .

What do ya think, Team Obama?

How about having them meet this October for the next ColacMarCuba2009 for Marine Conservation in Habana.

3. FYI, Fidel Castro is no longer the president of Cuba.
Raul Castro is the current head of state of Cuba. It is he that President Obama should meet with.

Raul Castro, President of Cuba

4. I'm fully aware of Presidente Raul Castro. . .
. . .meant no disrespect.

How about all three meeting?

Heck, if Obama can meet with Russian leaders, why not both Castro brothers?

How absolutely juvenile of our policymakers not to move forward toward reconciliation with Cuba.

That's all and out.
