Measure submitted to dump Calif. gay marriage ban
By The Associated Press
09.24.2009 2:35pm EDT

(San Francisco) A group pushed ahead Thursday with a campaign to repeal California’s same-sex marriage ban, even though some other gay rights organizations think it’s too soon for another expensive ballot fight.

Los Angeles-based Love Honor Cherish proposed ballot language to strike the ban approved by state voters in November as Proposition 8.

The new ballot proposal says religious institutions would not be required to perform same-sex unions if it conflicts with their beliefs.

“The refusal to perform a marriage under this provision shall not be the basis for lawsuit or liability, and shall not affect the tax-exempt status of any religious denomination, church or other religious institution,” reads the exemption, an attempt by Love Honor Cherish to defuse one of the arguments Proposition 8 sponsors used to garner support last fall.

1. The opponents of gay marriage are not worrying about requiring churches to marry gays.
They are opposed to the very idea gays marrying and just needed an excuse.

I do wish people would be honest about their prejudice.

8. True, today religious groups can and do refuse to marry people who don't meet their criteria
And I say that that's their right. A church should be able to refuse to marry non-members who don't agree with their tenets. But they shouldn't be able to keep anyone from obtaining a legal marriage certificate and being married in a civil ceremony.

In fact, I'd advocate the French system whereby one has a civil ceremony and a religious one if desired: more parties!

2. I can hear the Mormons grabbing their checkbooks now.
And already practicing crying in the mirror for when they play the "victim" when their bigotry is pointed out.

4. I hope it succeeds, but isn't an appeal of the prior ballot initiative still making its way through
