FBI: Man Arrested Trying To Bomb Dallas Building

The FBI says it has arrested a Jordanian citizen for trying to bomb a Dallas skyscraper.

As we were first to report here on CBS11TV.com, 19-year-old Hosam Maher Husein Smadi was arrested Thursday afternoon.

The FBI says agents arrested Smadi after he placed what he thought was a bomb at the base of Fountain Place, a 60-story skyscraper located at 1445 Ross Avenue in downtown Dallas.

The FBI says undercover agents found out about Smadi's intent to commit violent attacks in Dallas. The FBI says agents tried to get him to change his mind about committing the attacks, but were unsuccessful.

Undercover agents met with Smadi several times, they say, posing as a sleeper Al Qaeda cell. During one of those meetings, agents say Smadi decided to place a car bomb at the base of Fountain Place.

It was a dummy bomb.

2. Well fuck..thank goodness for DUMMY bombs (and here is a pic of the all glass building)
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 06:47 PM by rainbow4321
I was just at the downtown train station an hour ago :scared:

edit to add another fuck..it's the building below...ALL glass. A few months ago I looked up while waiting for the train and saw that a couple glass panels had either fallen to the ground or just been taken out, and they had wooden boards where the glass had been.

3. hmmmmmmmmm...........
It seems the FBI gave this teenager a "dummy bomb." Is that right? Did they goad him into placing it at the base of the skyscraper as they "posed" as sleeper Al Qaeda cells?
I am not sure what I think of this story. I am interested in what other DUers think.

5. That's mentioned in the story
The FBI says undercover agents found out about Smadi's intent to commit violent attacks in Dallas. The FBI says agents tried to get him to change his mind about committing the attacks, but were unsuccessful.

I imagine they were careful to get that exchange on tape.

7. I think they should spend more time catching REAL terrorists
like the assholes that strung up the census worker the other day.

and less time tricking stupid gullible kids into doing idiotic things so they can pad their arrest statistics and show us all how "tough on terrorism" they are.

13. So someone who plants a bomb in a public plaza thinking it is real, isn't a REAL terrorist?

21. that is correct
he is a patsy
maybe the fbi wanted to use him as an informer but he was too crazy
does the fbi not detain people suspected of terroristic intentions?
was this some good police work?
they are so corrupt that creating terrorists to arrest is becoming sop
at least they no longer go through with the bombings to validate the threat

27. lol on the CLASSIC
it was entrapment kneejerk response.

"tricking stupid gullible kids" into doing (this is my favorite) "idiotic things"

love it.

defining planting a bomb as a problem of being "idiotic"

good job.

my friend who was nearly paralyzed with fear about being in his office building after 9/11. My friend who falls for the pro-torture argument because of said fear.

10. President Obama has kept us safe
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 06:44 PM by Alcibiades
Remember how the "fact" that he "kept us safe" (never mind 9-11) meant that we should line up and do whatever Bush wanted, re-elect him, let him use the Constitution as a barf bag, etc.? Well, not Obama has kept us safer than Bush for longer than Bush.

So when do the MSM line up to give him kudos?

15. Ridiculous conspiracy theory against Obama
You've got to get used to the idea that President Obama isn't Bush.

There's footage of Zazi buying hydrogen peroxide being shown & discussed on AC360 now, Peter Bergen says that this is a key piece of evidence that shows his intentions. Or do you think he did that in a studio?

14. No one kept us safe. This guy was a nut, not a terrorist.
Please. Why in the world was he given a dummy bomb? If this is a terrorist and this is the terrorism a terrorist could do, link up with cops, and procure a dummy bomb, what are we afraid of?

If it was entrapment, the court will have its say.

Can't believe that some here are defending this guy as a poor innocent kid.

24. uhm, doesn't pass the *sniff* test, imo.....
:wtf:

The FBI says agents tried to get him to change his mind about committing the attacks, but were unsuccessful.

-----

This makes it sound like the FBI are like priests or something...."don't do it brother, don't do it!" When THAT didn't work, they arrested the 19 y/o Jordanian

I certainly don't know what the real story is here, but it sure doesn't 'sound right' to me. FBI knew about the possible crime beforehand and then TRIED TO TALK HIM OUT OF IT???? :wtf:

They're obviously trying to hang a big crime on an unsuspecting post-pubescent FOREIGN patsy.

Foreign people are 'scary'. :eyes: :sarcasm:

26. I think some of the 9/11 hijackers were pretty young too, so I don't excuse him as just a kid, but
Edited on Fri Sep-25-09 02:09 AM by WatchWhatISay
I do wonder if all of these "saves" lately are designed to soften us up on the idea of escalating troops in Afghanistan. As if to show that we are lucky to have averted a second major terrorism attack and we better get back to the idea of cutting off Al Queda at its head.

I don't beleieve Obama would do this sort of thing, but I don't put it past some of our security agencies to do it outside of his authority.

28. That part makes sense to me, really
I really don't think a couple of guys in FBI jackets showed up at his door and tried to talk him out of it that way.

Going through with it - or trying to - is the crime. If a fed posing as an accomplice got the guy to think "you know, you're right, this is a bit crazy, I need to back off," then the person in question reverts to an innocent man with a change to do something productive instead. If they try to talk him out of it and he remains determined to try an attack, then that's some pretty solid evidence against him.
